The year-end ceremony recognized nearly 80 students who completed one year of study in the OCB New Vision Allied Health, Law and Government, and Specialized Careers programs. Each offering provided high school seniors with a chance to explore different career fields, with classroom learning coupled with twice-weekly rotations at various sites across the county.
Students in teacher Joshua Osborne’s class at Granby Elementary recently studied a unit on animal responses. Students observed live lobsters and crayfish and made predictions on which was the fastest, based on their size and health.
Parents and family members along with BOCES and component school district officials gathered for the distinguished ceremony to celebrate students’ accomplishments and educational achievements as they prepare for careers in police science, security, surveillance, corrections, emergency medical response, firefighting and the military.
Project Explore students at Oswego County BOCES have been busy as bees completing a Project Based Learning initiative to benefit honey bees and local agriculture. The PBL project was coordinated cooperatively by teachers Dave Proietti and Kate Clark. “We asked the students to identify a need and create a project to address that need,” Proietti said.
A 28-year tradition continued along the Oswego River recently as Phoenix fourth graders participated in Canal Days. The annual event brought students, school officials, politicians and local dignitaries together for a step back in time.
Operation Oswego County held its 62nd annual meeting at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center on Tuesday. Kevin LaMontagne, president of the OOC board of directors, welcomed more than 160 representatives of businesses, government, education, labor and other ally organizations to the meeting. Keynote presenter Zelko Kirincich, executive director of the Port of Oswego Authority, highlighted plans to increase activity at the port,
Kyle Doppelheuer, a first grader at Michael A. Maroun, embodies the school’s word of the month, citizenship. Doppelheuer is a budding philanthropist, and has provided many service hours to the community.
Members of the Oswego County BOCES Deaf and Hard of Hearing Club were recently invited to an anti-bullying presentation at the Fulton Junior High School. The speaker was Matt Hamill, a deaf wrestler and MMA fighter.
Under the direction of Jim DeMauro, student musicians performed “Side Slippin,’” “Pepperoni Blues,” “I Beeped When I Should Have Bopped,” “Grabbin’ Some Air,” and “Don’t Miss the Bus.”
Due to the structural concerns of the former Cahill/Coleman Building, a section of the West Linear Park has been closed.
