County leaders strongly support efforts by all levels of government to stabilize and reduce property taxes in New York State. The New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) has put together a proposal for not only freezing, but lowering property taxes throughout the state.
On March 29, Bishop Grimes will host the annual Academic Games. The competition is offered to Catholic School students in grades K-6. Event categories include: Math, Science, Oratory, Drawing/Painting, Spelling, Vocal, Essay, Religion and Lego Robotics. Eligible students may enter more than one category and contestants compete on an individual basis.

Abigail Venskus, a sophomore at JCB, recently competed in the 26th annual Shakespeare Competition held at the Archbold Theatre at Syracuse Stage. The public-speaking contest, which is conducted by the Syracuse branch of the English-Speaking Union of the United States, commemorated William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday.

Assemblyman Will Barclay was joined March 4 by fellow lawmakers from the state Senate and Assembly and Upstate Poison Control officials at a press conference to ban synthetic drugs. Joining these officials at the press conference was Teresa Woolson and her family, who are advocating for stronger laws regarding synthetic drug use. In 2012, Woolson’s son, Victor, died from injuries related to synthetic drug use.
Student actors and actresses, under the direction of Director MaryAnn House, will bring to life Richard Bissell’s comic novel Seven and a Half Cents, about labor relations in a pajama factory. It’s a family friendly show filled with great songs and lots of dancing.
Unit 2 at Constellation Energy Nuclear Group’s (CENG) Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station was manually shut down at approximately 1:45 a.m. due to an electrical component failure on the non-nuclear side of the plant. All safety systems responded as designed and the plant went offline as expected, safely and without incident.
Volney Elementary School students attended a spirit assembly Feb. 28 in recognition of their positive behavior and for being role models. Principal Lisa Garofalo gave certificates to one student from each classroom that exemplified the character trait of honesty.
