Fifth grade students at Lanigan Elementary School recently participated in a new group aimed at including parents into the new common cores standards and curriculum for the grade, the Lanigan Café Book Club.
“Caring,” “generous” and “dedicated to our community” were phrases heard often by the crowd who gathered during a reception at Bishop’s Commons Enriched Living Residence in Oswego, as speakers described characteristics of the 2012 John Foster Burden Award recipients.
The final two students, Oren McDougal, 7th grade, and Conner Waggoner, 8th grade, went back and forth for several rounds before McDougal successfully spelled the word succumb after Waggoner had incorrectly attempted the word. McDougal then correctly spelled the winning word: monumental.
Role model students at Lanigan Elementary School were recognized for exhibiting November’s character attribute of the month, gratitude.
23 foreign exchange students from 19 different countries around the world, which are living locally in the Upstate New York area, were hosted by the Scriba Volunteer Fire Department on December 1. The highlight of the tour was the students trying on the turnout gear worn by the firefighters.
At 12:25 this afternoon (Dec. 3), Oswego County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence on County Route 25 in the town of Minetto to investigate the report of a missing person. While investigating the matter, deputies were dispatched to another location about one tenth mile away for the report of the discovery of a body of a deceased woman.

The literary works of Volney Elementary School students were featured at a recent author’s tea in the school’s library. Student authors from Erin Brewster’s fourth grade class presented Native American folktales during the event that they wrote and illustrated.
Karen Murray has been named executive director of St. Francis Commons Assisted Living Residence in Oswego. St. Francis Commons is currently under development, with construction expected to be complete in the fall of next year.
On 12/02/12 three men were arrested in connection to a robbery/burglary home invasion that occurred about 1 a.m. on Sunday at a town of Mexico residence. They are accused of breaking into a town of Mexico residence, wearing ski masks and gloves, with one reportedly attacking a male victim, wrestling with him on the porch, while the others entered the home from another access.
