Birdlebough Senior Athletes Honored at Recognition Banquet

The Phoenix Central School District, in conjunction with the Phoenix Firebirds Sports Booster Club, honored athletes from the John C. Birdlebough Class of 2014 at the annual Senior Athlete Recognition Banquet.

More than 50 seniors were recognized at the banquet for their participation in interscholastic athletics and several distinguished awards and scholarships were presented.

The Pete Zollo “Mr. Baseball” Scholarship Award recognizes one senior baseball player for exemplifying love and passion for the sport and the community.

Varsity baseball coach Charles Chawgo presented this year’s award to Emilio Tassone.

Senior Michael Mironti was presented with the Ridge Barden Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

The Don and Marcia DenBleyker Scholarship recognizes student-athletes for their athletic performance, overall scholastic achievement and community service.

The 2014 recipients were three-sport athletes Alexandra Wilson (tennis, basketball and softball) and Eric Hillpot (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and field).

Established in 2008, the Judi and Doug Graham Scholarship Award is presented annually to one male and one female athlete that is involved with sports boosters’ activities as well as athletic and school activities and also demonstrates outstanding character traits.

This year’s recipients were Kimberly Holbrook (tennis, basketball, softball) and Dylan Switzer (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and field).

Seniors Haylie Virginia and Dylan Doupe were recognized for their outstanding contributions to their sports teams and presented with the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award.

This award is presented in honor of Ronald P. Woodruff, retired Phoenix Central School District Athletic Director.

The “Doc” Jones Athletic Scholarship Awards are presented annually in honor of previous long-time Athletic Director “Doc” Jones to recognize a well-rounded male and female athlete for their achievements in the field of athletics, academics, leadership and community service.

 

The 2014 honorees are Paige Recore (volleyball) and Dylan Doupe (football, outdoor track and field).

Additional honors presented at the banquet include: Section III Scholar Athlete Awards to Meghan Lentz and Bryce Plante; Parent of the Year Awards to Mary Plante and Brenda and Brian Doupe; Coach of Year Awards to Michelle Goodfellow and Andy Lewis.
