OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego City School District Board of Education has adopted the use of a committee system.
The system was initiated in the fall of 2010 and is moving forward.
With the introduction of the committee system the Oswego City School District Board of Education has only one regular meeting a month while the committee meetings are usually held two weeks before the regular board meeting.
Board of Education President Dave White explained, “The committee system allows the board members to be more involved in the process. It also allows the board members to be better informed and helps in improving relationships between the board and administration.”
For the month of January the committee meetings are scheduled for Jan. 11-12. The committee meetings are conducted in the board room at the Education Center and are open to the community.
On Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. the curriculum and personnel committees will meet while on Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. the finance committee will meet and the policy committee will follow.
During the Jan. 12 Finance Committee meeting there is expected to be lengthy discussion of the 2011-2012 Oswego City School District budget as the committee members have provided anticipated parameters to the district administration.
The items discussed would be placed on the Jan. 25 Board of Education regular meeting agenda.
With the new process the three members of the respective committees listen to the proposals of the administration for requests of what items should be included on the regular monthly meeting agenda. Not only are proposed resolutions discussed, but the committees also hear reports on various items and determine whether those reports should also be brought before the entire Oswego City School District Board of Education.
The committee system is unique is that after the committee members discuss the items other board members, administration, faculty, staff, parents, and interested community members may also voice their opinions.
This provides for a very open forum for the board, administration and the community and hopefully will further increase input and communication.
The current committees are in the areas of finance, personnel, curriculum and policy.
Members of the Finance Committee as John Dunsmoor (chair), Kathleen Allen and Sam Tripp while the Personnel Committee includes Tom DeCastro (chair), Allen and Fran Hoefer.
On the Curriculum Committee are James Tschudy (chair), DeCastro and White while the Policy Committee includes White (chair), DeCastro and Dunsmoor.
Currently, the pre-committee meetings are conducted during the first week of each month and the committee meetings are held during the second week of the month. On the second Tuesday are the curriculum and personnel meetings while on the second Wednesday of each month finance and policy meet.
The meetings are scheduled for 5 p.m. with one immediately following the completion of the first one.
For the remainder of the year the regular Oswego City School District Board of Education meetings are scheduled for Jan. 25, Feb. 22, March 22, April 26, May 24 and June 28.
