ORWELL – The Oswego County Health Department issued a boil water order this afternoon, June 9, 2011, for the Town of Orwell water district. People in the Town of Orwell are advised to boil tap water at a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking or food preparation.
A drinking water standard was violated. Every month one routine sample is collected to test for the presence of coliform bacteria. So far in June, 2 out of 5 samples showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The NYS standard is that no more than one of the samples may be positive in any month.
Both samples were negative for e-coli bacteria.
The county Health Department is working with the town to correct the problem and testing is being done to make sure bacteria are within allowable levels.
Residents on town water should boil tap water for at least minute and let it cool before using it for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation. Residents may also purchase bottled water as an alternative.
