Mexico Middle School students combined their love of celebrities and their Spanish class to create beautiful Dia de los Muertos altars. Both seventh grade and eighth grade students studied the culture around the Day of the Dead, where families in Mexico honor and remember on Nov. 1 children who have died and on Nov. 2 adults who died.
Oswego resident Brandon DeSantis recently won $5,000 as a member of Oswego County Federal Credit Union’s Lucky Savers program. Lucky Savers is a statewide savings program where participants are eligible for cash prize drawings every month, and $5,000 and $250 cash drawings every quarter, explained Bill Carhart, CEO.
Frederick Leighton Elementary School is inviting all veterans to join its Veterans Day Celebration on Thursday, November 9, at 9 a.m. The event will honor veterans from all branches of service and feature guest speakers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Oswego’s Team RWB.
Lawrence Macner, Fulton’s sixth ward representative on the Common Council is seeking re-election on Tuesday, November 7. Macner has been on the Fulton Common Council since January of 2012. “My theme will be, as it’s always been, quality of life for sixth ward residents,” he said.
Callie was a teenage mother, probably unwed, as we used to say in the “good” old days. But, she has done a great job of raising her kittens, all of them feisty little calicos, just like her. Now she is ready to be a teenager again and would like to come and play with you. She loves people, snuggling with them, playing with them, following them around.
The Fulton Veterans’ Council will host a Veterans’ Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, at Veterans’ Park, across from Fulton City Hall on South First Street. The public is invited to attend. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at City Hall beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Thanks to the City of Oswego’s Common Council, the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, the Oswego Public Library’s 2017 Summer Reading Program and the Oswego County Health Department, there are two new Little Free Libraries in Oswego for children and families to enjoy. The new libraries are in Shapiro Park on Paloma Street, on Oswego’s west side, and in the lobby of the Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic at 70 Bunner St., on the east side.
Oswego Health will host a free lunch and learn, “How We Hear and What Can Go Wrong With Our Hearing” from noon until 2 p.m. on November 14 at GS Steamers in Oswego. Speakers include Oswego Health Audiologist Kathleen Burch, who has more than 20 years of experience providing diagnostic evaluations for hearing and balance, as well as hearing aid consultations, fitting and service for the health system.
The 1886 Malt House is the state’s largest malt house and through its state-of-the-art facility and team of American Society of Brewing Chemists, it plans to purchase ingredients from New York State farms to produce more than 2,000 tons of high quality malted barley a year.
The award-winning Crane Opera Ensemble and Orchestra at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music is set to present an uproarious double-bill, bringing together Giacomo Puccini’s comic opera in one act, “Gianni Schicchi,” combined with the modern sequel, “Buoso’s Ghost,” by contemporary composer Michael Ching, from Nov. 16 to 18. The cast and orchestra includes Ethan Lenhart of Williamstown, who will be playing the role of the Magistrate’s guard.
