The Oswego County Health department offers a variety of services to all residents of Oswego County, including preventive health services, certified home health care, certified hospice, and a maternal and child health program.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt allowed 982 refugees who survived Nazi reign into the country as his “guests” with the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter becoming their home from August 1944 to February 1946. The museum tells the story of their voyage to America, their arrival in Oswego, their interaction with the city residents and the life-long friendships developed during their stay.

Bridget Dolbear, program services coordinator for Oswego County Opportunities, has announced that OCO is participating in the Summer Food Service Program again this year. Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like OCO to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer.

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 367 students who excelled academically in the Spring 2015 semester to the College’s Dean’s List.

One of the benchmarks for a strong community is the overall health of its residents. United Way of Greater Oswego County helps to fund 16 human services programs that focus specifically on improving the health and well-being of Oswego County residents. Two of which that are vital to that mission are the Legal Aid Society and the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County.

Merit awards and senior scholarships/awards were presented, as well as junior incentive scholarships to area colleges and universities. More than 250 scholarships/awards were presented to Oswego High School students, amounting to almost $800,000.

The Oswego High vs. Oswego Middle School faculty flag football game was held recently at Joe Wilber Field in Oswego.

After announcing the top readers during a morning assembly, the top 14 participants in the Accelerated Readers program gathered outside with Principal Jean Ciesla and school librarian Barb Senecal and were treated to pizza and ice cream.

Students named to the Newberry College Dean’s List have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for the semester.
