Chad Bigelow and Heather Holmes’ classes listened to American Red Cross presenter Ellyn Gloshinski share about emergencies such as fires and floods and how to be better prepared for those kinds of situations. A portion of the learning involved coping skills during emergency circumstances.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Phoenix Central School District has been recognized by the National Association of Music Merchandizers as one of the country’s Best Communities for Music Education. Now in its 16th year, BCME affirms school districts that have demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of schools’ core curriculum.
Pulaski Elementary students combined culinary, mathematics and reading comprehension learning to make loaves of bread from scratch, which were donated to a local food pantry. Math AIS teacher Sally Oliver coordinated the event, setting up bread making stations that included bowls, flour, oil, etc.
The Minetto Elementary School held a 1950s Day during school recently, as a culminating activity for its dance unit in grades 4-6. Students were able to participate in a 1950s-era costume contest, as well as a swing and partner dancing.
The Oswego County Legislature’s Human Services Committee recently recognized Gail Stoughtenger, community services worker with the county Department of Social Services, for her 25 years of dedicated service to Oswego County government.
Sandy Creek Elementary Students learned about bus safety during a puppet show put on by the school’s transportation department recently. Transportation Supervisor Robin Cashel said the production is an annual event that brings something new each year.
Student art was showcased at Leighton Elementary School recently for the Youth Art Month Celebration and Art Show. March was Youth Art Month, and students and families were able to come and view a variety of art pieces that were on display throughout the school.
APW fourth and fifth graders used math and science skills that align with the common core to make delicious bread from scratch as part of the King Arthur Bake for Good program. Presenter Amy Driscoll explained and demonstrated the process of baking bread, giving baking technique tips and emphasizing the importance of reading and following directions.
The Fulton Companies and Pulaski Academy and Central Schools are reviving and expanding a collaborative internship program for students. In the past, Fulton has had Computer-aided design interns. But now, with determined administration and thriving student interest, PACS and the Fulton Companies are working together in creating bigger and better opportunities for Pulaski high school students.
Oswego resident, Michele Hamer, is on a mission. A mission to raise funds to benefit the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse Restoration project. Hamer is serving as guest bartender at Gibby’s Irish Pub located at West Second and Lake streets on April 11 from 1-5 p.m. In addition to the cash bar, Gibby’s Irish Pub will be offering its famous chicken barbeque dinner for eat-in or take-out.
