The Oswego Reading Initiative has chosen Karen Joy Fowler’s PEN/Faulkner Award-winning novel “We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves” as the summer read for the SUNY Oswego and greater Oswego communities.
Oswego County Opportunities’ Literacy Volunteers Program is offering a tutor orientation for its 2015 winter session on March 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. The orientation will be held in the lower level of the Midtown Plaza, 75 E. First St.
Area senior citizens have had the opportunity to learn important safety tips from Oswego Health and Menter’s Ambulance Services staff members, as well as from two groups that work to prevent falls. The senior safety program was recently held at St. Luke’s Apartments, Bishop Commons and Simeon Dewitt Apartments, all in Oswego.
Nina Purkiss, a resident of Central Square, was one of 42 SUNY Potsdam student-athletes to earn a spot on the State University of New York Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the Fall semester, the conference announced February 12. Purkiss is a freshman member of the SUNY Potsdam women’s cross country team.
To be named on the list, students must be full-time and have achieved a grade point average of 4.0.
Rotarians Peggy Donnelly and Mike Schroeder introduced Rotary high school exchange student Antonia “Toni” Neidhardt. She recently spoke to the Fulton Sunrise Rotary Club about her home country. Toni and her parents live in Goslar, Germany.
The Auburn/Cayuga Community College Alumni Association is seeking nominations for its 2015 Alumni Association awards. The award recognizes graduates of the college who have distinguished themselves in careers or community service.
Getting (or got) cabin fever? Come to the annual Fight The Fever! event, sponsored by Winona Creek. All handcrafted show featuring local artists and facepainting. The kitchen will be open with the usual fare or stop by the bake sale table. Admission is simply a donation at the door. All proceeds benefit the Sandy Creek High School Show Choir.
Members of the Oswego downtown business group, DOERS, recently held a holiday wreath raffle where numerous businesses made decorative wreaths and raffled them off to the public to raise funds for charity. The two organizations benefitting from the effort were the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse Restoration project and the Blessings in a Back Pack project.
Students from Granby Elementary School recently attended a district board of education meeting and presented project they completed based on an ancient civilization. In early December, sixth grade students in Joe McNamara’s social studies classes were tasked with creating projects that in some way reflected Ancient Egypt.
