SUNY Oswego has made $2,000 Merit Awards to a select group of transfer students who are starting at the college in fall 2014.

Bill Reilly, owner of river’s end bookstore in Oswego presented Meg Henderson, coordinator of Literacy Volunteers, with a two $50 gift certificates that will be used as part of the prizes for the eighth annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble Fest. To be held September 19 at the Oswego Elks Lodge, Scrabble Fest serves as a fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers.

The bookmobile is a summer program that provides free books to students in the Oswego City School District. The bookmobile encourages summer reading for at-risk children from pre-K to grade 12 by traveling to Oswego neighborhoods and giving away new or gently loved, popular books. In addition to receiving a book at their independent reading level, children also have a healthy snack and sometimes participate in literacy activities.

The Oswego County Legislature’s Health Committee presented the village of Pulaski with the first place award in the county’s annual best-tasting drinking water contest during the August Legislature meeting.

With a commitment to instruction, academic and social growth of each student, the Fulton City School District will host an attendance awareness celebration this weekend. The event, which coincides with Attendance Awareness Month, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Fulton Education Center, 167 S. Fourth St. Families are invited to participate in an afternoon of free activities, food, music, games and prizes.
