Calling all word wizards! Registration is now open for Scrabble Fest 2014. The eighth annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble Fest, a benefit for Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, will take place on Sept. 19 from 6:30 – 9 p.m. at the Oswego Elks Lodge.
For the past 50 years Literacy Volunteers has been an invaluable resource for Oswego County residents looking to improve the quality of their lives. Providing quality tutoring in reading and writing through an eighth grade level, financial and health literacy, English speaking skills, and basic math and computer skills, Literacy Volunteers has had a profoundly positive impact on the lives of hundreds of individuals and families who have accessed its services.
‘Stuff-A-Bus’ is a community-wide campaign that aims to relieve the financial stress for local families by getting students prepared with the gear they will need for back-to-school. The Fulton City School District Teachers’ Association, in cooperation with the United Way of Oswego County, coordinates the initiative for the Fulton community, which in 2013 provided 211 students with essential back-to-school supplies.
G. Ray Bodley High School seniors are reminded that retakes for their Fultonian yearbook senior portraits will be taking place on August 27 at the high school. School Pictures of Rochester will be at GRB from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the auditorium.
Celebrating Magic In Minetto was held on Aug. 9, during Canal Splash. Canal Splash is a statewide Erie/Oswego Canalwide promotion by the NYS Canal Corp highlighting activities and events on the canals. It is always held on the second Saturday of August. The presentation of the canal scene mural, painted by AmeriCorps artists, was a highlight of Magic in Minetto.
The Oswego Lions Club will present the ninth annual “Cow Chip Bingo” with Classic Car Show on September 13 at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego. The Cow Chip Bingo portion of the day will begin at noon. We will also feature Lighthouse Lanes famous chicken Bar-B-Q being served from noon to 4 p.m. or until sold out. Proceeds from the Cow Chip Bingo portion will be used to support our annual scholarship fund in memory of Harold “H” and Mary Dowd.
Fulton Amateur Radio Club is pleased to announce another free amateur radio entry level Technician course starting September 8 in the County Building in Fulton, across from Mimi’s at 7 p.m. The only cost to students will be the purchase of the study guide.
On August 8, Oswego AmeriCorps members Ruth Vasquez and Astry Y Vasquez came together with volunteers to help Fulton Parks and Recreation Department by painting the bleachers at Denesha Field. After about 20 years, Denesha Field’s bleachers finally got a fresh coat of forest green paint. AmeriCorps members address critical needs in communities all across America.
Oswego Health’s Advanced Orthopedics Group welcomes Jerod Hines, MD, to suite 280 of the Oswego Health Services Center. Dr. Hines is a graduate of the University of Utah’s School of Medicine, located in Salt Lake City. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery and his fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at McGill University Health Centre, located in Montreal, Quebec.
U.S. Representative Dan Maffei announced that he has returned more than $5 million in benefits for Central New Yorkers. “Assisting hardworking families in Central New York and securing the benefits they have earned and deserve is one of the my highest priorities,” said Rep. Maffei.
