Oswego County Opportunities recognized nominees for the prestigious Amelia Whelahan Award at its annual meeting held recently at Springside at Seneca Hill.

Advancing understanding of how microbes can help clean up soil after an oil spill, identifying effective methods to survey and track mammal populations, and developing a user-friendly online education platform are just some of the ways the first recipients of SUNY Oswego’s Possibility Scholarship, all from Syracuse, are making a difference in the world.

The Oswego City School District Board of Education recently thanked and recognized retiring teachers and support staff members. Nearly 300 years of experience will be leaving the district as a result of these retirements.

With more than 1,600 SUNY Oswego students eligible to take part in the college’s three commencement ceremonies on May 17, many have already found their directions before donning their caps and gowns.

Friends of Camp Hollis will host a fun-filled day at Camp Hollis at its annual open house from 1 to 4 p.m. May 18. “This is a great opportunity to visit the site, ask questions, meet some of the camp staff, and experience a taste of the camping environment,” said Brandon Morey, coordinator of recreation and youth development for the Oswego City – County Youth Bureau and director of Camp Hollis.

Harborfest is seeking participants for the popular Juried Arts and Crafts venue at River Walk East during the 27th edition of the festival. The festival said it is one of the most popular attractions at Harborfest and is enjoyed by thousands of visitors who come back each year to view and purchase the quality craft items available.

Assemblyman Will Barclay announced Monday that New York State’s Tax Freedom was Sunday. Tax Freedom Day marks the date when New York State’s citizens have collectively earned enough money to pay their total tax bill for the year.
