When restauranteur Laurie O’Brien opened Red Sun Fire Roasting Co. in 2010 with her husband, Will, she had a specific vision for their urban-style eatery. It was not until recently, however, that she discovered a chef who truly understood and shared her vision.
Herkimer County Community College awarded academic honors to 555 students for the spring 2013 semester. Included are 305 students named to the Dean’s List for earning a grade point average between 3.25 and 3.79.
This spring, Mexico’s own Abbott’s Oh Do Kwon Tae Kwon Do triumphed at Master Kim’s Super Cup Competition. Of the eighteen Abbott competitors, nine gold medals were achieved, eleven silver medals, and three bronze medals. One student, advanced brown belt eleven-year-old Kiara Richer, took home the Grand Trophy for winning the gold in all three events of board break, poomse and sparring.
The second concert in the Oswego Summer Sunset Concert Series will be held July 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Breitbeck Park in Oswego. These concerts are provided free to the public by the city of Oswego and The Musicians Union of Oswego County. The Concert Band, under the direction of Kevin Upcraft, will be performing this week.
A group of local Oswego students ranging in ages recently performed in a showcase entitled “Rising Star Musicians” at Bishop’s Commons Enriched Living Residence. Sharing their musical talents, students performed solo acts playing a variety of instruments for residents to enjoy. While many performed on the piano, the show also featured musical pieces played by students on their violins, saxophones, flutes, and clarinets. The program was just one of the many inter-generational opportunities that take place at Bishop’s Commons between seniors and children.

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 377 students who excelled academically in the Spring 2013 semester to the SUNY Potsdam Dean’s List.
The event is returning to CNY Arts Center July 15-19 and August 19-23 with a week of art, writing, dance and theatre classes for ages 5 to 15. It will be held at 357 State St., Fulton.
Fulton Rotarian Judy Young, program chair, introduced Kathleen DeGolyer and Abel Searor from Fulton Community Theater to the Fulton Noon Rotary Club at a recent meeting. The theater group will present “The Golden Age of Broadway” with music and songs from the great Broadway shows of the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s.
The Baldwinsville library is receiving over $6,600 to complete energy-saving renovations, while the Phoenix Library is getting more than $12,500 to repair its roof and enact energy-saving measures.
