The 171st day of the 2102-13 school year was a pretty special day for students in first grade at Sandy Creek Elementary School. The students hosted and were the stars of a Reading Tea. The tea is an annual event at the school where each first grader invites one special guest to their classroom for a celebration to commemorate reading and writing achievements.
The Special Education Department at Oswego County BOCES (OCB) honored the class of 2013 with a commencement ceremony in June.
Each student starts their school year in pretty much the same way – introducing themselves to their classmates and making new friends. The same is true for the second grade students in Terry Merritt’s class at Lanigan Elementary School and Rauri Downes’ class at Volney Elementary School, but with a slight twist.
The following area students have been named to the spring term Dean’s List at Hartwick:
William Carhart, CEO, Oswego County Federal Credit Union, was recognized as the 2013 ‘Outstanding Professional’ by the Credit Union Association of New York ($50 million to $250 million in assets) at its June 14 annual meeting in Lake George.
Joan Wood Benjamin and Marilyn Wood of Murrells Inlet, SC, recently took their parents, Carl and Jean Wood, former Parish residents, to New Orleans, Louisiana. They toured the French Quarter, The French Market, the World War II Museum, took a ride on a Steamboat down the Mississippi and had dinner at restaurants that played Jazz and Cajun music.
The 2013 Free Summer Concert Series starts Wednesday at the Bullhead Point Pavilion with the Fulton Community Band starting at 7 p.m. On Friday, The Sounds of Brass will be performing at the Downtown Gazebo on South First Street beginning at 6:30 p.m.
At a recent Sunrise Rotary meeting, Rotarian Dan Farfaglia introduced Dr. Jiancheng Huang, director of Oswego County Health Department. Dr. Huang presented an engaging powerpoint and discussion of diseases spread by insects and animals in the wild. He made a very important point that it is crucial to focus on prevention of these diseases.
All Oswego County government offices will be closed Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day.
At a recent District Changing of the Guard meeting, Doug Stevens, Fulton Sunrise Rotary, was presented with the 2013 Rotarian of Excellence Award by President Patrick Waite. This award exemplifies Service Above Self.
