Reapportionment Hearings Begin

July 25, 2011 Submitted article

Assemblyman Bob Oaks speaks with Roman Hedges July 19 in Syracuse before the start of the first hearing of the New York State Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment. Hedges, of Delmar, is a citizen appointee on the six-member task force and Oaks is one of four legislative members. The task force has scheduled 12 hearings at locations throughout the state to hear the public’s views on how the new congressional and state legislative districts should be configured to reflect population changes that have occurred. After the hearings, a map with new districts will be drawn and the hearing series will be repeated. It is possible an independent commission could be created and the process adjusted. In any case, the new lines will be subject to passage by the legislature and the review of the U.S. Justice Department.Assemblyman Bob Oaks speaks with Roman Hedges July 19 in Syracuse before the start of the first hearing of the New York State Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment.
