CNY Arts Center announces the debut of two youth productions onstage November 22 and 23 with Drama Club and Kids Onstage. Both groups have been meeting weekly since mid-September and will present to parents, family and friends in separate performances. Both presentations are pay-what-you-can performances open to the public in lieu of tickets and take place at 357 State St., in Fulton (use the Park Street entrance).
The villains in the thriller “Wait Until Dark,” SUNY Oswego’s fall student honors production, conspire to seize a drug-filled toy from a Greenwich Village apartment. The 1966 Frederick Knott play in Tyler Hall’s lab theatre will preview at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19, and run at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 to 23, with a finale at 2 p.m. Nov. 24.
“Lizzie Borden Took an Axe” will be presented at the Robinson-Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts at Oswego High School on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Please contact the box office at 341-2270 with any questions.
SUNY Oswego pianist and music faculty member Robert Auler will perform at 3 p.m. Nov. 24, in the Sheldon Hall ballroom, playing a repertoire that will include a work by 2007 alumnus and classical composer George N. “Nick” Gianopoulos. Gianopoulos was an 18-year-old freshman from Baldwinsville when he took an introductory music course and his first-ever piano lessons at SUNY Oswego.
When John and I visited Tinian Island we rented a car and drove to North Field at the far end of the island. North Field is in the process of being reclaimed by nature with most of the field overgrown. There are a few monuments commemorating units who served on the island, glass shelters over the two pits that once housed the atomic bombs, and some bomb shelters.
SUNY Oswego’s student honors production of “Wait Until Dark,” playing Nov. 19 to 24 in Tyler Hall’s lab theatre, will put the audience right on top of the thriller, and that’s fine with director and senior theatre major Dana Ernest.
“One thing about this play that’s so great is that it’s such heightened realism,” Ernest said. “That’s really what we’re going for … But the audience is so close, we can’t get away with anything — it has to be real.”
When Paul Osborn’s play, “On Borrowed Time,” directed by Richard Mosher, opens on November 15, there will be a couple of new faces in the cast. Check the Oswego Players’ website at www.oswegoplayers.org for additional information.
John and I are always on the lookout for unique recipes especially something that is characteristic of a locality. On our visit to Ottawa we stayed at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, and didn’t think we would find something uniquely Canadian since the culinary cultures of Canada and the United States are so closely linked.
As the end of the Oswego Players’ very successful 75th Anniversary Season draws near, it seems appropriate to give credit to those who work so hard behind the scenes to support the work of the director and actors in a show. These are the people who never get a rest. As soon as one show hits the boards, they are working on the set design and implementation for the next one.
The “Graphic Flash” exhibition, following last year’s successful debut, will open with a reception from 4 to 5:20 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Penfield Library lobby. At 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12, readings will take place in the Campus Center auditorium as illustrations project on-screen. The exhibition will run through Dec. 7 in the library.
