Sandra Scott Travels: A Glimpse Into World War II Docked at Mobile

The “Mighty A”On our recent trip to Mobile, John and I visited the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park and it turned out to be much more than we expected. Besides the battleship there is also the USS Drum submarine, 24 combat aircraft that were used during and since World War II, tanks, a Vietnam River Patrol Boat and more. The USS Alabama saw 37 months of active duty during World War II, earning her nine Battle Stars.

The Battle HouseLast week I asked: What city is called the Azalea City? It is Mobile, Alabama. Recently, John and I visited Mobile, a great city with a lot to see and experience. Located on the Mobile River it is one of the largest cities on the Gulf Coast plus the first capital of French Louisiana. Our hotel, The Battle House, was in an excellent location and very historic.

Sandra Scott Travels: Lighthouses – A Beacon for all Travelers

Statue of LibertyMany people don’t think of the Statue of Liberty as a lighthouse but it was officially classified as a lighthouse from 1886 to 1902 and was the first American lighthouse to utilize electricity to light its beacon, which could be seen for more than 20 nautical miles.
There are nearly 100 lighthouses in New York State that have safely guided ocean, lake and canal vessels through the years.

Sandra Scott Travels: At Home With Hammering Hank

Last week I asked: What baseball great was nicknamed “The Hammer?” It is, of course, Hank AaronHank Aaron. On a recent trip to Mobile, Alabama, John and I visited the Hank Aaron Childhood Home. It was built by his father, Herbert, in 1942 and is located next to the Hank Aaron Stadium. We were lucky Mike Callahan, the stadium’s assistant general manager, was available to give us a tour because he is an encyclopedia of Hank Aaron stories.
