Tucker is everything you expect from a young happy boy. He’s not a kitten anymore. He spends about 80% of his day lounging on his bed watching the world. But when he is up and playing he’s great with other cats, dogs and children. He especially likes morning and evening cuddles. In short, he’s a well-rounded perfect cat and totally handsome to boot.
We would usually claim that we hate to nag you. But, then we looked at all of our past columns about Halloween and realized that we actually do nag a fair amount. But nagging works! So here we go again. The truth about Halloween is that most pets sort of hate it. For them, it’s just people, including their own personal people, acting really weird.
He’ s a big, handsome orange boy. He loves kids and people; but is a bit of a wuss around other cats, even little puny ones. Go figure. He gets stupid around catnip, (but is funny to watch) and his favorite toy is a crinkly burlap tube thing that only a goofy cat would find entertaining.
It’s fall, that magical time when everything is gloriously beautiful, the air is cool, we can soon stop worrying about heart worm and maybe even fleas and ticks, there’s not much mud, it hasn’t snowed yet, in short a perfect time of year for pets and their people. BUT, and there is always a but, there are a few things we all need to be extra cautious about right now.
Isn’t Zilla the prettiest thing? She’s a young medium hair fluff ball with a sweet cuddly disposition. She was hit by a car near Fulton and rescued by a kind-hearted police officer who took the trouble to find help for her late at night. She was banged up by the car, but no life threatening injuries and is now recovered and ready for a home.
In September, last year, the ASPCA filed a petition with the USDA asking that agency to strengthen its regulations concerning animal breeding facilities, what we all know of as “puppy mills.” While no one wants the practice of puppy milling to continue, in the meantime there are hundreds of them around the country, including right here in Central and Western New York. Current standards of care are so weak that breeders can legally keep dogs in tiny, stacked cages with wire floors that may injure their paws and legs.
Snickers is a pretty muted calico tortie with an impish personality. She’ll play with people, just not “up close.” So, laser pointers and fishing pole type toys are her favorites. She happily sleeps with the other cats in her foster home and plays with them, too.
He is a cuddler, a greeter of guests, a champion napper and all around entertainer. He loves grownups, kids, other cats, dogs. From his beginnings as a terrified kitten hiding under an abandoned trailer, he has come totally out of his shell and is just a delight.
Last week we answered a question about coyotes and then this week we received an email from a kind-hearted man who had rescued a wounded cedar wax wing and wondered whether the Oswego County Humane Society could take it in. That got us thinking about wild animals in general. OCHS is not licensed as a wildlife rehabilitation agency to take in wildlife, but we do care about them and we know many of you do as well.
I live out in the country and the past few nights I have been hearing coyotes howling. It sounds like they are just outside my windows sometimes. I have never actually seen one. I just hear them at night and my pets are all in at night. But should I be concerned about one of my pets (I have two cats and a dog) running into one during the day?
