Buddy & Porky: About Animal Cruelty

Dear Porky and Buddy,

I heard on the news last night about two boys being arrested for animal cruelty for basically terrorizing a cat and posting what they did on the internet. Thank goodness the cat wasn’t physically harmed, but if so, is it still cruelty under the law? And a couple of weeks ago I read about some people being arrested for starving their horses almost to death. If they weren’t feeding their animals how come no one caught them sooner? What does New York law say about all this?

Dear Porky & Buddy,

My next door neighbor came home with a new puppy a few weeks ago that she had gotten from a free to good home ad. I use the word “free” advisedly because a week after the puppy arrived he was at the veterinary hospital with parvo and almost didn’t make it. Now $2300 later, he is home and I guess ok, but should I be worried? My kids were playing with him and I have my own (fully vaccinated) dog.

Porky & Buddy: How Pets Multiply

Dear Porky and Buddy,

Someone just told me that over the course of six years, one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs, and over the course of seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats. She was trying to persuade me to have my cat spayed before she has any kittens. But honestly, if those figures were true, wouldn’t we be up to our knees in cats and dogs? I mean, a lot of pets are not spayed. Those figures don’t make any sense.

I just received a reminder card about vaccinations for my pets, a dog and a cat, but I keep hearing horror stories about the dangers of vaccinations and now I don’t know what to do. I hate to annoy my vet, as I basically adore her, but still, I worry. Do you have any suggestions?

I just looked at the outdoor thermometer and it’s 10 degrees. My adopted boxer mix is crossing his legs and begging me to just this once not make him go outside to do his business and my elderly cat won’t come out from under the covers. Are there any special things I should know about taking care of my pets when it gets this cold.
