Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, the Oswego Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association during Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
Here in Oswego County 13 people are diagnosed with cancer and 5 die from cancer each week. Female breast cancer accounts for 11.4% of all cancer cases and 5.2% of all cancer deaths. For Oswego County Opportunities’ Cancer Services Program those are unacceptable numbers that they are dedicated to reducing.

Children’s flu shots are now available at the Oswego County Health Department’s regularly scheduled immunization clinics Tuesdays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic, 70 Bunner St., Oswego, and the third Tuesday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m. at the H. Douglas Barclay Courthouse, Pulaski.
Almost 70 children throughout the area participated in Assemblyman Will Barclay’s summer reading program. The recognition party was held Sept. 26 at the Fulton Public Library.
Internationally recognized sculptor Coral Lambert will appear at SUNY Oswego’s second annual iron pour at 6 p.m. Oct. 15, on a grassy knoll between Oneida Hall and the Village student townhouses.
Hannibal High School students can explore many music opportunities with the new music lab. A $10,000 grant secured by state Sen. Patricia Ritchie was used to fund much of the equipment.
