A novel idea at Fairgrieve Elementary School has translated into reading success within the building, and students were recently rewarded for their efforts. At the beginning of the school year, Principal Jean Ciesla launched a reading challenge to all the students at Fairgrieve.
As students in the Phoenix Central School District are dealing with a relentless winter season, they learned how their peers in Texas were coping with below-average temperatures while interacting with one another during a recent Read Around the Planet videoconference.
Fairley Elementary School was invited by North Rose Elementary to participate in Inventive Minds, a voluntary program geared towards third and fourth grade students. Inventive Minds is a program designed to challenge students to create an invention that solves a problem, or makes life a bit easier.
March kicked off the annual “Friends of the Festival” Campaign for Oswego Harborfest. Each year, Harborfest friends support the festival through donations. These donations are a part of what helps to keep Harborfest admission-free.
Volney Elementary Principal Lisa Garofalo set a challenge for students at the last school spirit day assembly, read 2,500 books during Read Across America Week and she would sleep on the school roof and dye her hair purple.
Students in Barbara Mosny’s second grade class at Fairley Elementary School connected via distance learning with Dorothy Stinson School in Safford, Ariz., recently for Read Around the Planet. The videoconference was part of a distance learning initiative between Oswego County BOCES and the Hannibal CSD.
Karrie Damm, executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Oswego County, recently spoke to the Fulton Noon Rotary Club. The center was formed in 2001 and serves as a “one stop” place for sexually abused children ages birth to 18.
With the need for food subsidy increasing and food pantries throughout Oswego County being hard pressed to meet the growing demand, the United Way of Greater Oswego County is doing its part to raise awareness of the food shortage in Oswego County and encourage the community to help fill the shelves of our area food pantries.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County is pleased to bring dairy farmers in the area the 2014 edition of the Spring Dairy Managers Meeting. It will take place on March 24 at the Oswego County Federal Credit Union Community Room, located at 5828 Scenic Ave. (Route 3) in Mexico. The cost to attend is $15 and includes lunch.
