University Police at SUNY Oswego recently placed second in a national competition among college and university law enforcement departments, many of them much larger than Oswego’s 21 sworn officers. The International Association of Chiefs of Police recently announced the recognition for the University Police in the 2012 Law Enforcement Challenge, a national traffic safety program that recognizes excellence through a competition within categories of police departments from municipalities, states, federal agencies, military and others.

As students in Central and Northern New York prepare to head back to the classroom, State Senator Patty Ritchie is releasing the results of her 2013 School Survey, which shows that most people think area schools are “excellent” but have concerns about more rigid standards under the state’s new Common Core as well as bullying in schools.

Participants in Catholic Charities’ Family Education, Family Support Services, and Relatives Raising Relatives programs were recently treated to a group picnic at Scriba Town Park. Twenty-nine families gathered for a day of fun and networking.

Opening speakers for this year’s Ernst & Young Lectures Series at SUNY Oswego include three Oswego faculty members and one of Syracuse University’s Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows. The 2013-14 lectures will be at 6 p.m. on selected Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Campus Center auditorium. The series complements the “Gender and Workplace” course, part of Oswego’s women’s studies program.

Local favorites, F5 will be rocking the after ride celebration of the Child Advocacy Center’s 10th Annual Blue Ribbon Ride Against Child Abuse. To be held September 7, the celebration will begin at 5 p.m. at Lighthouse Lanes, Shampine Drive in Oswego. The event includes a chicken BBQ, drawings for themed gift baskets and other items including an official hockey stick signed by team members of the 2013 Calder Cup finalist Syracuse Crunch.

EAA, the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 486, located at the Oswego County Airport, County Route 176, Fulton, will partner with the FR Sussey Composite Squadron (Civil Air Patrol) on September 8 from 7 a.m. to noon to honor our Emergency organizations and our Veterans and especially to pay tribute to the victims of 9/11.

The Wooden-Apple Farmstead in Palermo, NY is hosting the first Wooden-Apple Music Festival on September 1 from 2 until 8 p.m. The day’s lineup includes Lois Dixon & the Olives, Gina Holsopple, The Polashenskis and more! The festival will conclude with an open mic and storytelling,

SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations will welcome the Leadership Oswego County class of 2014 at a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 12. The reception, open to Leadership Oswego County alumni, employers and interested community members, will take place in Room 118 of Rich Hall on campus. Light refreshments will be served.

The Oswego Public Library welcomes its newest member Dr. Joseph Sgarlata to its board of trustees. Dr. Sgarlata is a retired teacher with more than 32 years of experience at Oswego High School. During his time there, he taught American History and Criminal Justice.
