Literacy Volunteers’ Annual Picnic Recognizes Students, Tutors
On July 11, more than 80 people gathered at Breitbeck Park for OCO’s Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County Annual Picnic and Awards Ceremony. The evening began with Sarah Irland, deputy executive director of Oswego County Opportunities, welcoming all attendees. The picnic is a great occasion for everyone to share their stories and have a good time.
Leadership Oswego County Youth Graduates Class of 2013
A 10-month program, Leadership Oswego County Youth combines classroom instruction, workshops, and a variety of activities that provide students with the skills needed to succeed as leaders in their school and in the future.
Hofstra University Recognizes Spring 2013 Dean’s List Students
More than 2,000 high-achieving students have been named to the Hofstra University Dean’s List for Spring 2013. Students who began their studies before Fall 2012 must earn at least a 3.4 grade point average to qualify. Those who entered the university after Fall 2012 must earn a grade point average of 3.5.
Local residents participate in SUNY Oswego Global Laboratory
Several area residents are among nearly 60 college and university students who took part in hands-on learning in SUNY Oswego’s Global Laboratory network at science labs around the world this summer.
Catholic Charities Welcomes AmeriCorps Member Eve Simmonds
Helen Hoefer, supervisor of Emergency Services at Catholic Charities of Oswego County, has announced that AmeriCorps Member, Eve Simmonds has joined the Emergency Services staff. A sophomore at SUNY Binghamton, Simmonds is pursuing a degree in English Rhetoric.

Aliff Joins Eastern Shore Associates Insurance
Elizabeth Aliff was hired recently as a commercial lines customer service representative at Eastern Shore Associates Insurance (ESA) it was announced by Martha Murray, president. Aliff will be based in ESA’s Fulton office.
Oswego Fire Department Offers Free Smoke Detectors With Help of Community Businesses
Oswego residents in need of a smoke detector need to look no further! With the help of Eagle Beverage and Raby’s Ace Home Center, the fire department is offering free smoke detectors to owner occupied residences in need. “This program is an outstanding example of people helping people,” said Jeff McCrobie, Oswego City Fire Chief.
Port City Roller Derby, Humane Society to help furry friends
Port City Roller Derby teams up with the Oswego County Humane Society to help some furry friends at their Naughty-Cal Catastrophe bout on Saturday in Crisafulli Rink. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with a 6 p.m. whistle for the third home bout in the league’s third season.
