The following local residents were recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
The annual program administered by SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations prepares a select group of county residents to become the community stewards of the future. Each group embarks on a nine-month course on Oswego County and its resources, vital issues of today and visioning for tomorrow.

Campus Compact recently named SUNY Oswego’s Joseph DiLuca, a fourth-year accounting/MBA major, one of only 268 Newman Civic Fellows nationwide for 2018-19, thanks to sustained community service he has done, including raising awareness of the dangers of food allergies as a way to share lessons from his cousin’s death.
Specialist Brandon Vanwormer from Pulaski has reenlisted to continue service with the Forward Support Company, 204th Engineer Battalion.
The Oswego County Health Department offers a variety of services to all residents of Oswego County, including preventive health services, certified hospice, and a maternal and child health program.
Oswego’s Blessings in a Backpack program has received a $1,000 grant from Stewart’s Shops in support of the community organization’s work feeding needy children in Oswego’s five elementary schools over weekends and school breaks.
Following a visit from dental hygienists Wendy Probst and Cammie Lyndaker, students in grades pre-kindergarten through four were able to share the following steps to a great smile: brush twice a day for two minutes, use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash, floss, don’t snack too often and visit the dentist every six months.
Breaking barriers and finding their way through financial and other challenges, while excelling in the classroom, have earned five students Diversity Graduate Fellowships at SUNY Oswego. Current graduate fellowship recipients at Oswego include Stacy Araujo, Stacy Baum, Kimberlyn Fernez, Rodney Golden and Krystal Jones.
Eight not-for-profit organizations were awarded grants totaling $400,000 from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation in the first of three 2018 grant rounds at its March board meeting. Projects reach a wide range of people and organizations that focus on community revitalization and preservation, education, health and human services, workforce development and arts and culture.
