A New Year Begins in Hannibal, With Spring’s Cutbacks Causing Fall Complaints

The budget cuts enacted earlier this year in Hannibal became real Wednesday when school opened for another year. The changes forced on the district caused complaints when people saw what those cuts meant.

The problem areas included a French class taught via distance learning and the half-day closing of the libraries in the Kenney Middle School and Fairley Elementary School.

The campaign for Congress heads into the final days of the opening round with incumbent Democrat Bill Owens sitting on the largest pile of money.

‘I Need to See Her One More Time’: Woman’s Essay Yearns for Lost Mom, Highlights the Work of Literacy Volunteers

Shirley Slate reads from her essay as daughter Caroline Aguzar looks on.“If I could bring my Mom back from Heaven,” Shirley Slate began, reading from her very first essay, a prayer for the return from Heaven for her mother for one more day.

“I just want to hold her one more time,” she said.

That Shirley Slate could read or write that essay was remarkable.  At age 52, she’s learning to read and write and aiming to get her GED.

Fulton Schools’ Construction Work Wrapping Up in Time for School to Open

Nearly everything that is supposed to be ready for the opening of school in Fulton will be ready, officials say.

The district is in the midst of a pair of construction projects involving every building. Most of the work is saved for the summer break, putting crews on tight schedules to have work completed by the opening of school in September.

District Finds Lots of Holes in New Teacher Assessment Plan

Starting next school year, teachers will be described by one of four phrases. The right phrase could lead to tenure, promotion and more money. The wrong phrase could lead to a denial of tenure or even dismissal.

Fulton City School District personnel administrator Tom Greer gave the Board of Education a look at the new rules for performance reviews, which became law in June as part of several changes made by the state to qualify for federal funds in the competitive Race To The Top grant program.

The number and arrangement of feathers on the gustoweh helped identify the wearer as a member of the Iroquois Confederacy and the tribe to which they belonged.Take a visual tour of the proposed new logo for Fulton’s sports teams and high school. See it as its designers saw it.  We’ll break down the new logo, element by element, a process which reveals some of the story of the Iroquois in Fulton and shows how the designers want to convey an image of strength, pride and intelligence.
