The budget cuts enacted earlier this year in Hannibal became real Wednesday when school opened for another year. The changes forced on the district caused complaints when people saw what those cuts meant.
The problem areas included a French class taught via distance learning and the half-day closing of the libraries in the Kenney Middle School and Fairley Elementary School.

“If I could bring my Mom back from Heaven,” Shirley Slate began, reading from her very first essay, a prayer for the return from Heaven for her mother for one more day.
“I just want to hold her one more time,” she said.
That Shirley Slate could read or write that essay was remarkable. At age 52, she’s learning to read and write and aiming to get her GED.

Fulton’s varsity boys soccer team lost its opening game, 1-0, to East Syracuse-Minoa on Friday despite having control of the ball for much of the contest.
Saturday, the Red Raider boys were on their way to doing that all over again before pulling out a win.
