The organization that does so much for others is gearing up for its biggest fundraising event of the year. The Oswego County Salvation Army has begun planning for this year’s Red Kettle Campaign. The need is to raise more than $100,000.

Oswego Firefighters were alerted of a structure fire at 9 Porter St. on the city’s west side a little after 10 p.m. Saturday (November 3). Police reported the building fully involved and heavy winds pushing flames toward a neighboring home.

Mayor Billy Barlow announced his proposal to waive all fees associated with public ice skating at the city of Oswego public ice rinks. Previously, fees for open ice skating ranged from $1.50 per visit to $3 per visit depending on age. “Oswego families pay for these facilities already through their property taxes and should not have to pay a fee again,” the mayor said..

Some parents have said that when they checked their child’s candy, they found that a “DOTS” candy box had been opened and that the candy had been replaced with rocks (and then resealed).

The end of daylight savings (2 a.m. on Nov. 4) is rapidly approaching and the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York is urging New Yorkers to inspect their smoke alarms when they change their clocks. Working smoke alarms are critical in preventing fire deaths, fire officials said. According to the National Fire Protection Association, three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or working smoke alarms. FASNY specifically encourages New Yorkers to install smoke alarms equipped with sealed-in, non-removable batteries that last for 10 years.
