University Police Makes Felony Arrest In False Threat Incident

At approximately 10 a.m., on Wednesday, University Police received a call about a student who was verbally disruptive in a classroom in the Marano Campus Center. Officers conducted a thorough search and discovered an object that they believed might be hazardous. A formal investigation commenced with the help of the Oswego County District Attorney’s Office and the Oswego City Fire Department, who quickly determined that the object wasn’t hazardous and confirmed that the SUNY Oswego campus community was never in any danger.

Security, Safety Paramount On School, College Campuses

Recently, the news has been saturated with reports of threats of violence, lockdowns and, in some places, active shooters. “Cayuga Community College has a comprehensive, all-hazard emergency plan in place to respond to potential threats on our Auburn or Fulton campuses. We’re constantly reviewing and updating that plan,” Cayuga Community College President Brian Durant told Oswego County Today. SUNY Oswego has a plan in place, as does each state-operated SUNY campus. They must have an “All-Hazards” Emergency Response Plan that outlines how the campus intends to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from emergencies that occur on campus or affect the campus, according to Wayne Westervelt, chief communication officer.

Oswego Paving Project Nearly Ready To Hit The Road

At Monday night’s Administrative Services Committee meeting, Mayor Billy Barlow’s paving proposal received a green light. The $827,350 plan includes some of the Port City’s major streets and high traffic areas. It will be done in addition to the State Route 104 repave project scheduled by the NYS Department of Transportation for later this summer, the mayor told the committee.

Oswego Capital Project Vote Set March 6

Taxpayers in the Oswego City School District will go to the polls Tuesday to decide the fate of a proposed multi-million capital project aimed at refurbishing the district’s aging schools and athletic fields. The projected cost of the plan is $60,180,000. It has been in the works for about 10 years, according to Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey. The district’s recent responsible budgets and reductions have helped make this project possible now, he said at a public hearing last month.

Mayor Barlow Proposes Blight Reduction Loan Program For Vacant Property

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (March 2) a proposed piece of legislation that he believes may be the most effective code enforcement measure yet to address vacant and blighted property in the city of Oswego. The legislation would allow the city of Oswego to repair property cited for exterior code violations and bring the property back into compliance with city rules and laws.
