The Winona Forest Recreation Association kicks off its season of winter events Jan. 28 with the Empire State Snowshoe Championship Race and the Stone Wall 5K Walk/Run through the sprawling 9,000-acre state forest in northern Oswego and southern Jefferson counties. “The Winona Stone Wall has evolved into one of the Northeast’s premier snowshoe events,” said race director Rich Shumway.
At its meeting Monday night, the Common Council tabled a pair of resolutions until they could get some more information. The DPW commissioner’s request to set a fee schedule for use of Breitbeck Park (non-pavilion area) for weddings and the Sea Cadets’ request to use the McCrobie Civic Center on certain dates for drills were both pulled from Monday night’s agenda.
Thomas Benedetto, with 25 years of experience in Family Court and a lifelong Republican, has announced his candidacy for Oswego County Family Court Judge. “The safety and well-being of our children will be a critical issue in this race,” Benedetto said. “Electing someone with the right mix of legal and practical experience is key. My background as a former prosecutor, family lawyer and judicial official gives me unique insight about protecting our children’s best interests.”

First St. in Fulton, with a satellite office at 4822 Salina St. in Pulaski, the CAC of Oswego County is a non-profit charitable organization that works to protect and serve children that are victims of sexual and physical abuse. They have been seeing an increase in the number of cases in recent years. The director attributes that to the good work of area law enforcement and several other agencies; it doesn’t necessarily mean there is more abuse in the county than elsewhere, she pointed out.

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Jan. 18) that, for the second year in a row, city overtime expenses have declined. Total overtime for all city of Oswego departments combined in 2017 was $857,395. The total for 2017 was significantly less than the official total for 2016 at $1,008,502, the first year of Mayor Barlow’s administration, and significantly less than the total in 2015 at $1,228,384.
The Oswego County Health Department is seeing an increase in reports of bats found in homes over the past few weeks. Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang said today (Jan. 17) that it’s not unusual for people to find bats in their homes during the winter.
Couples looking to celebrate their weddings in Oswego’s Breitbeck Park are likely going to be hit with a fee. At Tuesday night’s Administrative Services Committee meeting, councilors gave a favorable recommendation to a request by Tom Kells, DPW commissioner, to approve a charge a per hour fee for use of Breitbeck Park (non-pavilion area) for weddings.
