Flu Season Arrived Early But Not As Bad As Other Areas

The flu arrived in Central New York early and the numbers are high this year, according to Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. The county has seen an increased number of lab confirmed flu cases compared with the same time last season, Huang told Oswego County Today. So far this flu season, Oswego Health is not experiencing the number of flu cases that its neighboring counties are encountering, an OH spokesperson pointed out.

Brouse, Clark Remembered for Their Service to Oswego County Students

Two members of the CiTi Board of Education representing two separate Oswego County school districts have died within one week of each other. Janice Clark, 83, of Mexico passed away December 29, 2017, and Casey Brouse, 51, of Parish, passed away January 4, 2018. Clark was an active member of both the Mexico Central School District Board of Education as well as the CiTi Board of Education at the time of her passing. Brouse was president of the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Board of Education as well as a member of the CiTi Board of Education at the time of his passing.

NYS Winter Fishing Tournament Continues to Feb. 28

Anglers fishing the 2018 NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament can visit three local businesses — All Seasons Sports and Salmon River Sports Shop in Pulaski, and App’s Bait and Tackle in Cleveland — to register and weigh in their catches. The statewide event includes all waterways of NY State, allows anglers to use any legal angling methods and includes seven main categories of fish plus an overall award for the largest burbot caught this year.

Oswego County Joins the Fight Against Manufacturers of Prescription Opioid Painkillers

Simmons Hanly Conroy law firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of Oswego County against pharmaceutical companies and physicians over the aggressive and fraudulent marketing of prescription opioid painkillers that has led to a drug epidemic in the county and throughout the nation. The county seeks relief in the complaint that includes compensatory and punitive damages, for the millions of dollars it spends each year to combat the public nuisance created by the drug companies’ deceptive marketing campaign that misrepresents the safety and efficacy of long-term opioid use.
