Katko Announces Legislation To Stop Importation, Distribution Of Synthetic Substances

This morning (June 19), U.S. Rep. John Katko stood at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse to announce bipartisan, bicameral legislation he has introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to combat the synthetic drug epidemic that has swept Central New York. Toxic, synthetic drugs are designed to mimic street drugs like marijuana, LSD, cocaine, Ecstasy and other hard drugs. They can be more potent than the real thing and just as deadly.

Missing person is located in Brooklyn

SUNY Oswego officials have reported that Natalie A. Smith, a VISTA member assigned to SUNY Oswego and reported missing since June 9, was located by New York State Police investigators Friday evening, June 16, in Brooklyn. Smith is well and, upon interviewing with state police investigators at the 72nd Precinct, has indicated her wishes to remain in Brooklyn.

Economic Development Organization Presents Annual Activity Summary, Achievement Awards

Key note presenter Chris Mudrick, senior vice president of northeast operations for Exelon, shared a video highlighting the timeline of events which Exelon and the Upstate nuclear fleet have traversed over the past few years. L. Michael Treadwell, executive director of OOC, reported that in 2016, projects assisted by OOC and the County of Oswego IDA resulted in the creation or retention of 1,520 jobs with nearly $193 million in capital investment associated with 35 new, expanded or retained facilities.

County Moves Ahead With Intermunicipal Sewer District Plan

Capital project #192 was established in 2009 for the purpose of advancing municipal sewer service from the city of Fulton into the town of Volney. The project was designed and approved – but never funded. Now, the county is proposing to construct “Section 2,” which would provide service along Route 176 and most of Howell Road. This would include the airport and the adjacent industrial park properties.

Smith, a VISTA employee (Volunteers in Service to America – a program of the Corporation for National & Community Service’s AmeriCorps) assigned to SUNY Oswego, was reported missing to Oswego State University Police on Friday, June 9. Smith was last seen traveling in her vehicle (a blue 2006 Chevrolet Impala with New York registration / plate – HNS 4758) eastbound on the New York State Thruway early Monday morning, June 5.

Oswego Public Library Celebrates 160th Anniversary

Gerrit Smith was an abolitionist, women’s rights activist, educator and wealthy landowner. He owned property in his home region of central Madison County and elsewhere, including vast holdings in Oswego County. He started the Oswego Public Library (the castle on the hill). It opened its doors for the first time in 1857, making it now America’s oldest public library still in its original building. The library, located at 120 E. Second St., near Oneida Street, marked the occasion with an anniversary celebration on Wednesday.

Pam Caraccioli honored as Woman of Distinction, elected to statewide economic development board

Pam Caraccioli, deputy to the SUNY Oswego president for external partnerships and economic development, this spring earned two honors: a regional award for accomplished and community-minded women and a statewide board membership. State Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, named Caraccioli a 2017 Woman of Distinction, an honor that the senator bestows “recognizing outstanding leaders who are achieving success in their careers, devoting time to volunteer causes in their communities and more.”
