Solar Workshop Set for April 20 in Oswego

SolarizeCNY will host a free workshop on solar energy systems from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at the McCrobie Building, 41 Lake St., Oswego. The workshop will include a presentation on the basics of solar electric systems for the homeowner, as well as a new way of using solar energy called community solar. Representatives from several solar energy companies will be on hand with information and displays, and will be available to answer questions from workshop participants.

Burke’s Support Helps Build CMOO’s Town Square

The Children’s Museum of Oswego is pleased to announce that it has received a major gift from Burke’s Do It Best Home Centers for the Build, Play, Grow Campaign. The gift will be used to create a hardware store exhibit as part of the museum’s plans for a 1,500 square foot “town square” area. The child-sized Burke’s hardware store will feature opportunities for children to utilize tools and various home building materials as well as learn about how plumbing and electrical systems work in our homes.

Habitat for Humanity Chapters Recognize Need, Encourage Volunteerism

Twelve years ago, Debbie Anderson sat around her kitchen table and started to think about how to change the Habitat for Humanity chapter of Oswego. Habitat for Humanity, a worldwide non-profit organization was founded in 1976 outside of Americus, Georgia, according to habitat.org. Millard and Linda Fuller, the eventual creators of the company, coined the term “partnership housing,” determined to provide affordable and decent homes for those in need. Like the Fuller family, Anderson, president of the Habitat for Humanity chapter of Oswego, was innovative in her efforts to impact her surrounding community.

Oswego County Health Department Celebrates Public Health Week – the Nursing Division

The Health Department’s Preventive Department takes the lead role in preventing the spread of disease and related disabilities. This is achieved through disease investigations, providing immunizations and monitoring immunization rates, reviewing and following up on lead test reports for county children, collaborating with area health care providers, and educating the public. In 2016, the Oswego County Health Department conducted about 800 investigations related to reportable diseases.

Oswego School Board Plans Budget Workshop

The district was expecting additional state aid, according to Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey. However, due to the late state budget, the district use the (lower aid) figure contained in the Governor’s proposed budget. Dr. Goewey said he will arrange a budget workshop for next week to hash out the 2017-18 budget.
