School Budget Nearly Done, Officials Work To Lower Tax Rate

The Oswego City School District’s 2017-18 budget is nearly done. However, the tentative $82,938,392 spending plan still contains a 2.8 percent tax increase. “Our goal is to create a tax increase that will be supported by the community and I think we’re almost there,” Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey said Tuesday night. “We’ve made progress in the last week.”

Oswego County DA Seeks To Keep Killer In Prison

Alan Jones was convicted of Depraved Indifference Murder after a jury trial for causing the death of Erin Maxwell. Jones’ murder conviction was subsequently reversed and reduced to Manslaughter 2nd and he was re-sentenced to a prison term of 5 to 15 years. “Thankfully, the parole board has consistently denied his application for release and he remains in state prison,” Oswego County DA Greg Oakes said. ” However, he will be appearing before the parole board again in June.”

Committee Gives Bemelmans Festival Favorable Recommendation

Plans to stage the Bemelmans Festival next month (May 12-20) at the Fort Ontario Complex received a favorable recommendation at Monday night Physical Services Committee. The festival is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of World War I and 1917 deployment of Ludwig Bemelmans, author of Madeline Books, as a Private at Fort Ontario. The full council will consider the request next week.

State Directs Oswego County To Create Shared Services Property Tax Savings Plan

Included in the recently passed state budget is a revenue budget bill. Part BBB is a county-wide shared services property tax savings plan. “This is a mandate from the state,” County Administrator Phil Church told the legislators at Thursday night’s legislature meeting. The chief executive officer of each county, outside of a city of one million or more, shall prepare a property tax savings plan for shared, coordinated and efficient services among the county, cities, towns and villages within the county, he explained. The deadline to get a plan in place is Aug. 1.

Students Advocate For Safer, Improved Playground

The Council Chamber was packed Tuesday as nearly 100 Kingsford Park Elementary School second graders marched to City Hall with a message for Mayor Billy Barlow. The city-owned playground adjacent to the west side school has fallen into disrepair and the students voiced their concerns to the mayor and other city officials. There are some safety concerns, bad words that should be covered and other concerns, they said.
