An afternoon rain shower didn’t dampen the egg-citement for hundreds of children Saturday morning. Close to 600 children “hunted” for colorful plastic Easter eggs scattered around Oswego’s Breitbeck Park – mostly in plain sight.
Included in the recently passed state budget is a revenue budget bill. Part BBB is a county-wide shared services property tax savings plan. “This is a mandate from the state,” County Administrator Phil Church told the legislators at Thursday night’s legislature meeting. The chief executive officer of each county, outside of a city of one million or more, shall prepare a property tax savings plan for shared, coordinated and efficient services among the county, cities, towns and villages within the county, he explained. The deadline to get a plan in place is Aug. 1.
Breitbeck Park will be hopping this weekend. The Oswego Kiwanis Club will host the 2017 edition of the annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 15. The hours will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Julie Burns, president of the Kiwanis Club, said the club will facilitate the annual Easter Egg Hunt.
The Council Chamber was packed Tuesday as nearly 100 Kingsford Park Elementary School second graders marched to City Hall with a message for Mayor Billy Barlow. The city-owned playground adjacent to the west side school has fallen into disrepair and the students voiced their concerns to the mayor and other city officials. There are some safety concerns, bad words that should be covered and other concerns, they said.
Kevin Hill (Republican) of 136 W. Bridge St., has announced his candidacy for alderman of Oswego’s Third Ward. Hill is a graduate of Oswego High School with an undergraduate degree from Ithaca College and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from SUNY Oswego.
Horses are given a second chance at life through Sunshine Horses, a rescue with tender loving care and rehabilitation. The not-for-profit rescue’s goal is to retrain and rehabilitate the horses in order for them to find their forever homes.
The Common Council approved use of public space and funds in order to support and sponsor the Bicentennial Canal Theatre Project to be held August 18. The production will be directed by Steven York, and is an original dramatic play written by Oswego native Rick Sivers. The project has already received some outside financial support. The city’s share will be $4,000 or less.
Two separate garage fires reported in Oswego County on Sunday (April 9) resulted in total losses after multiple departments responded to assist in battling the blazes.
Standing at the 1886 Malt House in Volney today, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer pushed the U.S. Department of Agriculture to expand access to malt barley crop insurance to growers across New York State. He explained that there are currently only four counties that have access to federally backed malt barley insurance coverage in New York State, even though farmers in other states have broad coverage.
