Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today (March 13) declared a state of emergency across all 62 counties in New York ahead of the extreme winter storm expected to bring heavy snowfall and high winds. The Governor also directed non-essential state employees impacted by the winter storm to stay home from work on Tuesday without having to charge accruals.
SUNY Oswego students active in academics, research, leadership, athletics and community service will receive the 2017 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence — the highest student recognition through the statewide university system. Chancellor Nancy Zimpher invited them to attend the awards ceremony April 5, in Albany.
State Police arrested Lawrence J. Kline, 54, from Oneida River Road in Phoenix, for Assault in the second degree, a class “D” felony. On March 8, Mr. Kline was being transported by ambulance from his residence to SUNY University Medical Center in Syracuse for a complaint of back pain.
State Police arrested Matthew J. Peston, 32, from 142 Rainbow Shores Road in Richland, for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th degree, a class “A” misdemeanor; Making a punishable false written statement, a class “A” misdemeanor; and (6) counts of Torturing or Injuring animals-failure to provide sustenance, a class “A” misdemeanor.
In a relatively short State of the County address Thursday, the Chairman of the legislature praised legislators for a job well done in 2016 while stressing more needs to be done this year to keep Oswego County headed in a positive direction. “Every one of you (legislators) has made a difference in making Oswego County great. Every one of you stood together and helped,” Chairman Kevin Gardner said. Great things have happened in recent years in Oswego County that have changed the perspective of how local government operates, Gardner added.
On March 7, Calyx A. Estep, 19, was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison and 5 years post-release supervision in Oswego County Court upon his conviction for Robbery in the Second Degree. In January, Estep pleaded guilty and admitted that that he forcibly stole money from the Fulton Savings Bank in Constantia on November 28, 2016.
The Fort Ontario History and Archaeology Conference will be held at the Great Lakes Event and Conference Center at the Best Western Hotel in Oswego. Renown historians will speak at the conference, which explores the history and archaeology of warfare and human conflict in the United States and Canada from its earliest evidence around 5,000 BC to the 21st century War on Terrorism.
In 2016, more than 3,200 child abuse cases were reported to the state from Oswego County, an increase in recent years reported by the Oswego County Department of Social Services.
The 2017 St. Baldrick’s Day in Oswego is less than three weeks away, and this year the numbers of volunteer “shavees” is down. Event organizer Dan Witmer wants to make one last call for volunteers to “brave the shave” and help raise money for life-saving childhood cancer research. The Laker lacrosse team arranged a ‘St. Baldrick’s Night’ at YoBerry for Thursday, March 9, and another ‘St. Baldrick’s Night’ at Fajita Grill on Monday, March 20.
As New Yorkers prepare to set their clocks forward one hour, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges all New Yorkers to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure their homes are properly protected.
