Governor Andrew Cuomo today (Jan. 26) announced $41.26 million for cultural and arts organizations throughout the state. More than $75,000 of that will benefit organizations in the Port City.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-powered organization dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer research, will host its 11th annual St. Baldrick’s Day in Oswego at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center on March 26, where, hopefully, more than 200 “shavees” will shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving research.
Outdoor enthusiasts can learn winter survival skills and the basics of winter camping while exploring the grounds of Camp Zerbe at the second annual Base Camp Oswego County, a winter outdoor expo, Saturday, Feb. 25.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today (Jan. 24) that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in the City of Oswego. This is the third case of rabies confirmed in Oswego County since late December. Two dogs on the west side of Oswego were exposed to the rabid raccoon last week. Both dogs were up-to-date on their rabies vaccines and will require a rabies booster.
Oswego County is reminding residents that a new area code is coming to Central New York. A ‘680’ area code will be assigned to new telephone numbers throughout the region beginning in March. Existing phone numbers with the ‘315’ area code will not change.
At about 11:01 a.m. Monday (Jan. 23), members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of two fishermen having fallen through the ice on Sandy Pond. The two victims were recovered shortly after 3 p.m./ The investigation is ongoing.
The annual Salmon River Winter Festival returns to Pulaski for a full weekend of winter fun! From January 27 through 29 bring the whole family to enjoy a flurry of activities at locations throughout the village. Friday kicks off at the Kallet Theater on Jefferson Street with a free showing of Disney’s “Eight Below,” a classic adventure film starring Paul Walker.
Recently, some sharp-eyed walkers have spotted mittens, scarves and other cold weather apparel seemingly growing out of trees. It’s the second year of Gloves with Love, a program by the Oswego Federal Credit Union and Oswego County Opportunities. The Oswego Fiber Arts Studio Group has also implemented its Random Acts of Warmth and Kindness program to help the needy stay warm.
Anglers fishing the 2017 NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament can visit three local businesses – All Seasons Sports and Salmon River Sports Shop in Pulaski, and App’s Bait and Tackle in Cleveland – to weigh in their catches. Considered the largest winter fishing tournament ever conducted in NY state, the NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament continues through the end of February.
Through the hard work and tireless efforts of many local stakeholders, together with the leadership of Governor Cuomo, and a decision between Entergy and Exelon to sell the FitzPatrick plant to Exelon, this week more than 600 jobs were saved and nearly 1,000 tradesmen and women have gone to work in Scriba.
