Governor Andrew Cuomo today (Oct. 3) announced a new public awareness campaign encouraging New Yorkers to report the illegal sales of synthetic drugs, commonly referred to as synthetic marijuana. The campaign consists of ads that warn New Yorkers about the dangers associated with use of these man-made drugs and inform those who suffer from addiction that help is available.
Karl Haist of Clarence Center, NY, returned to the champion’s podium in a big way Saturday at the Great Pumpkin fest. His pumpkin weighed in at just less than one ton. And, it was more than 500 pounds heavier than the runner-up.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct. 14 and 15, the Friends of Fort Ontario, Central New York Ghost Hunters, and NYS Parks will host the annual Ghost Reveal and Tour event at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego. Sixteen students from around the county became the newest members of Oswego County’s Youth Court on Tuesday night. Oswego County Family Court Judge Kim Seager administered the oath at the Oswego County Courthouse on Oneida Street as members of the graduates’ families looked on, many of them taking photographs.
State Senator Patty Ritchie announced today (Sept. 28) she has secured $36,000 to help support music and arts programs in schools across Central and Northern New York. “When schools are forced to make budget cuts, often times it’s the music and arts programs that are among the first to go,” said Senator Ritchie.
Due to low numbers of mosquitoes and recent test results that show no evidence of Eastern equine encephalitis virus, the Oswego County Health Department has decided not to conduct aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor area at this time. Although the mosquito population continues to decline, people in Oswego County should continue to protect themselves from mosquitoes until the first hard frost.
The measure passed the House 158-101 and addresses the recent surge in synthetic drug use. It specifically bans 22 synthetic chemicals used to make drugs like “Spice” and “K2,” and outlaws three variants of fentanyl, which is among the most potent and dangerous drugs on the market today.

At Monday night’s Common Council meeting, the mayor’s proposed rental fee permit hike was approved, 5-1-1. Council president Shawn Walker cast the lone nay vote and Councilor Robert Corradino abstained. It will help hold landlords accountable and pressure them into maintaining their property, the mayor said.
