Oswego Boxing Club Competes at NYS Fair

The Oswego Boxing Club at the YMCA brought two fighters, Andre Mendez and John Shatraw to the Great New York State Fair to compete in the Tournament of Champions on Sept. 3. The tournament, hosted by Ray Rinaldi, a Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame inductee whose foundation created the North and West Area Athletic and Education Centers in Syracuse, brought eight boxing clubs from CNY, Pennsylvania and even Canada to the Sports Activity Center at the NYS Fair to battle it out in the ring.

Sheriff’s Office Reports Separate Marijuana Growing Busts

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office has reported two unrelated marijuana growing arrests in the town of Schroeppel. Both Paul D. Calderwood, 53, of 250 Barnard Rd. in Phoenix and Robert T. Holden, 55, of 271 Barnard Rd. in Phoenix were arrested on Tuesday, August 30 for “unlawfully growing marijuana,” on properties in the town of Schroeppel after a Border Patrol helicopter sighted the marijuana from the air, according to Oswego County Undersheriff, Eugene Sullivan.

Annual Carnival Highlights The Fun Side of Tennis

After weeks of drills at various locations around the county, young tennis enthusiasts recently had the chance to have some fun with their new skills. “The carnival is our end of the year celebration! We invite all of our children that have attended our program to come relax, have fun, and play tennis. It sort of culminates the summer not only for the kids but for my AmeriCorps members as well,” said Shane Evans, supervisor of the USTA Tennis Program at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

Region Named Natural Disaster Due to Drought; Local Farmers Can Apply for Help

Assemblyman Will Barclay said today (Aug. 31) he is pleased that the federal government designated Oswego and Onondaga counties as part of a natural disaster area due to the summer’s drought. The designation will make farm operators eligible for assistance from the Farm Service Agency if certain requirements are met, including low-interest loans.

More EEE Found Near Toad Harbor Swamp

The Oswego County Health Department reported today (Aug. 31) that the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus was found in a mosquito sample collected during routine testing on Toad Harbor Road in West Monroe. The sample was collected Aug. 24 by the Oswego County Health Department in the same area that EEE was found last week.
