In letters sent to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. Rep. John Katko urged the federal decisionmakers to review the pending agreement to transfer ownership and management of the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Plant in Scriba from Entergy Corp. to Exelon.
Business Facilities magazine recently ranked Oswego County tenth in the top 10 logistics leaders across the U.S. in its 12th annual rankings report. The rankings were based on “the locations which have tremendous assets serving all modes of transportation: air, land, water and rail.”
Cardiac surgeons at the University of Rochester’s Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital recently performed a 200th heart transplant surgery, providing a 48-year-old father a second chance on life. Transplant surgeons performed the six-hour life-saving procedure Aug. 24 and Stephen Waite Jr. of Oswego is recovering at Strong Memorial Hospital.
In one of the more unique “ribbon cutting” ceremonies, two huge dump trucks today (Sept. 20) poured tons of clay on the front stretch of the Oswego Speedway. Even though the clay hadn’t been placed on the front stretch until today’s official “dumping of the clay,” the remainder of the track had its first layers of the new surface laid down recently; while outside the track work continues on new camping areas.
Mayor William Barlow proposed increasing the rental permit fee in the city of Oswego to $150 for a three-year period, five times more expensive than the current $30 fee. It will help support the Code Enforcement Department and improve the quality of life in Oswego’s neighborhoods, he said. However, some detractors argue the opposite will happen. Landlords will not want to spend money on repairs after paying more for the permits, they said. And, it will likely cause landlords to raise the rent they charge, they added.

Senator Charles Schumer announced the U.S. Senate passed his legislation, which will help school districts across NYS test their drinking water for potential lead contamination. The senator said this bill would establish a new $20 million federal grant program for schools that choose to test for lead beyond this school year. He said, “our first priority should be keeping New York State children’s drinking water safe when they are at school.”
At its meeting this week, the Common Council approved the closure of East Albany Street between City Line Road and Shampine Drive during Super Dirt Week events.
Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Sept. 15) his proposal and strategy to hold city landlords accountable and pressure landlords into maintaining their property and treating their tenants fairly. He proposes increasing the rental permit fee in the city of Oswego to $150 for a three-year period, five times more expensive than the current $30 fee. The mayor also will pitch to the Common Council a change in a local law which he says will give the code enforcement office more authority to inspect and prosecute landlords who are in violation of the city housing standard.
A Comptroller’s audit and investigation exposed $2,950 gasoline theft from the Pennellville Volunteer Fireman’s Association. Former Fire Chief Duane Royal pleaded guilty Wednesday (Sept. 14) to petit larceny for stealing VFA gas for his private process-serving business, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said.
