Renovation Projects Being Completed Daily at Oswego Speedway

Improvements to the historic “Steel Palace” Oswego Speedway are progressing smoothly in advance of the 45th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week on October 2-9. With just under four weeks until DIRT cars take the 0.625-mile oval, crews are scattered around the grounds of the Oswego Speedway freshening up the 65-year-old facility.

Fire Causes Minor Damage At Water Department

The Oswego Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 7:42 a.m. Sept.9 at 30 Sheldon Ave., the city of Oswego Water Department. The fire was contained to the area of origin, and was determined to be caused by an accidental placement of combustibles near the stovetop in the break room. There were no injuries and the water supply is safe and remained uninterrupted during fire control operations.

Legislation Introduced To Address Synthetic Drug Epidemic

U.S. Reps. John Katko (NY-24) and David Cicciline (RI-1) today (Sept. 8) announced bipartisan legislation that they have introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to ban dangerous synthetic substances. The Dangerous Synthetic Drug Control Act addresses the recent surge in synthetic drug use by specifically banning 22 synthetic chemicals, including 11 used to create synthetic marijuana.

This year’s investigation found substantial improvements over the environment and events witnessed last year, which was essentially an “open air drug market,” according to State Police. While overall drug activity decreased from last year, this year’s investigation revealed continued drug sale and resulted in the arrest of 13 individuals, according to the Oswego County DA.

Oswego County Prepares to Conduct Aerial Spraying to Control EEE Virus

The Oswego County Health Department reported today that the EEE virus was found in three additional mosquito samples collected in the Toad Harbor Swamp. The new samples of infected mosquitoes were collected in the same vicinity of two samples that tested positive for EEE in late August. Due to these findings, the Oswego County Health Department is taking the necessary steps to conduct aerial spraying of 10,000 acres in and around the Toad Harbor Swamp.

Oswego Councilors Continue To Fine Tune Tentative Winter Parking Policy

The work in progress has been the topic of lengthy discussion twice before at the committee level. Each time councilors took no action on the matter, opting instead to continue working on the plan. On Tuesday night, Third Ward Councilor Nate Emmons presented an updated version of the proposal. The current plan would still be in effect from November 15 through March 31. The mayor, at his or her discretion, can extend it based on weather conditions.

Fort Ontario, Safe Haven One Step Closer to Becoming National Park

This evening (Sept. 6), H.R. 4204, the Fort Ontario Study Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by U.S. Congressman John Katko (NY-24) to advance the designation of Fort Ontario and the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum in Oswego to National Park status, unanimously passed the U.S House of Representatives.
