At its meeting this week, the Common Council approved the closure of East Albany Street between City Line Road and Shampine Drive during Super Dirt Week events.

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Sept. 15) his proposal and strategy to hold city landlords accountable and pressure landlords into maintaining their property and treating their tenants fairly. He proposes increasing the rental permit fee in the city of Oswego to $150 for a three-year period, five times more expensive than the current $30 fee. The mayor also will pitch to the Common Council a change in a local law which he says will give the code enforcement office more authority to inspect and prosecute landlords who are in violation of the city housing standard.

A Comptroller’s audit and investigation exposed $2,950 gasoline theft from the Pennellville Volunteer Fireman’s Association. Former Fire Chief Duane Royal pleaded guilty Wednesday (Sept. 14) to petit larceny for stealing VFA gas for his private process-serving business, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today announced that, in two distinct cases, four former nursing home aides who were paid to provide care to elderly residents and residents with substantial disabilities, were arrested and arraigned on September 13 before Oswego City Court Judge James Metcalf. All four defendants were charged with felonies and misdemeanors relating to allegedly taking still and video digital images of residents in undignified poses at two nursing homes in Oswego.

Most Reverend Bishop Robert J. Cunningham is pleased to announce today (Sept. 14) the appointment of Michael Huynh as Associate Director of Campus Ministry in the Diocese of Syracuse. Effective immediately, Huynh will work with campus ministers across the diocese in addition to his current role at SUNY Oswego.

The Common Council voted unanimously Monday night to set a public hearing regarding a change to the city code. City Attorney Kevin Caraccioli requested consideration of amending the provisions Chapter 83-5 of the city code. There is a need to ensure that property owners, including landlords, adhere to the code of the city, the attorney said, adding that the local law would do that and provide the city with the flexibility to enforce additional, applicable provisions of the code, he noted.
