State Officials Weigh In On New State Budget

Assemblyman Will Barclay said, The lack of transparency in this budget process was nearly incomparable. Bills were brought to lawmakers just hours before we were required to vote. Assemblyman Bob Oaks added, The state budget was finally adopted … after being negotiated behind closed doors and requiring a “message of necessity” from the governor to waive the ability of legislators and the public to take the normal three days to study and critically review the budget before it came up for a vote. Senator Patty Ritchie said, Just a few short months ago, we set out to craft a spending plan that strengthens the middle class, grows our economy and improves educational opportunities for students. Today, I’m proud to say we succeeded in achieving those goals, approving a new state budget that will help to build a better future for all New Yorkers.

First Rabies Clinic Of 2016 Draws a Crowd

Hundreds of people took advantage of the first rabies clinic of the year on Wednesday night to safeguard their pets from the rabies virus. “Rabies continues to be a threat in Oswego County,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director. Three wild animals so far this year have tested positive for the disease. The two most recent attacked unvaccinated pets.

Council Votes 4-3 In Favor Of Ethics Board

The Oswego Common Council approved the formation of an ethics board Monday night. The vote was 4-3. Councilors Shawn Walker, John Gosek, Nate Emmons and Robert Corradino voted in favor. Voting no were councilors Pat McLaughlin, Caitlin Reynolds and Eric VanBuren. One of the sticking points was that some feel that if the mayor appoints the three members, they could be perceived as beholden to the city’s chief executive, regardless of whether or not they actually are.

Oswego County Land Bank Corporation Meets to Elect Officers

The newly-formed Oswego County Land Bank Corporation met March 21 to elect officers and officially develop and approve policies and procedures. The corporation is a nonprofit entity whose purpose is to facilitate the return of vacant, abandoned and tax delinquent properties to productive use. This was the first official meeting of the new corporation.

Oswego Man Identified As Victim of Mexico Crash

UPDATED: The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office says 51-year-old Michael J. Fredette of Oswego was pronounced dead at University Upstate Hospital on March 26 following a rollover crash in Mexico Saturday evening. The driver, 51-year-old Douglas B. Horton of Mexico, was arrested for driving while intoxicated, deputies said.

Appeals Court Upholds City’s Ownership Of Cahill Building

The New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Judicial Department, unanimously affirmed a lower court ruling that dismissed a legal claim by local developer Thomas Millar asserting his ownership of the historic Cahill Building. The appellate ruling means that the city of Oswego retains title to the property located along the Oswego River, Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (March 26).

Jessica is one of more than 30 women who have volunteered to participate in an innovative new program, “Smoke Free for My Baby and Me.” This initiative is aimed at reducing smoking rates among pregnant women through clinic-based best practices, peer support, monitoring and incentives such as free diapers.

‘Smoke Free For My Baby and Me’ Program Marks Successful First Year

Nearly three-quarters of the women who participated in the “Smoke Free for My Baby and Me” program were able to quit smoking, the Oswego County County Health Department reported today (March 25). The project, which was implemented last May, is a partnership among several community agencies. Initial findings reveal a 73 percent success rate among participants to quit smoking.
