Change in Leadership Announced for Oswego City School District

The Oswego City School District Board of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Dean Goewey, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, will take the position of superintendent left vacant upon Ben Halsey’s recent resignation.

After careful consideration and a thorough interview process with Dr. Goewey, the board determined that Dr. Goewey’s appointment will best serve the interest of the district, while maintaining a continuity of leadership.

Siren Maintenance May Include Short Sound Tests

Annual maintenance of siren systems that surround the county’s three nuclear power plants may now include audible tests of a few seconds for each siren, Oswego County Emergency Management Director Dale Currier said today (Nov. 10).

At Monday night’s meeting, the Common Council honored a veteran Oswego police officer who died in the line of duty. Lieutenant Don Hill had served Oswego as a police officer for more than 20 years. He was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic on Nov. 11, 1995. The Civic Plaza will be dedicated as the Donald R. Hill Plaza.

The Children’s Museum of Oswego has announced plans for an 8,000 square foot children’s museum in the historic Buckhout-Jones building located at 7 W. Michael Barry, the town of Scriba Highway Superintendent-elect, and a current employee of the highway department, was arrested for driving while intoxicated earlier this summer and managed to stay silent about the charges during a hotly contested primary and general election, according to a statement from the town supervisor and attorney.

William Palange retired from the Oswego City School District in 2010, completing a career spanning nearly 35 years as a music educator. Palange was inducted in the New York State Field Band Conference Hall of Fame this past Sunday (Nov. 1) at the NYSFBC Championships. The Marching Buccaneers placed fourth in their division.

Troopers Investigate Double-Fatal One-Car Crash in Parish

The investigation revealed that Michael J. Lopresti, 27, from Phillipsburg, NJ, was operating a 1994 Ford northbound on Interstate 81 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree. Lopresti along with his passenger, Cecilia M. Phillips, 23, from Washington, NJ, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
