More EEE Found: Residents Urged to Continue Mosquito Bite Prevention Practices

The Oswego County Health Department announced that one mosquito sample tested positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus last week. The sample was collected from near the village of Central Square and within the target area that was sprayed on September 4. “Mosquito populations are substantially reduced; however, those that remain may still be infected with the EEE or West Nile viruses,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang.

Lifelong Educator And Social Security Advocate Announces Congressional Campaign

Eric Kingson, one of the country’s foremost authorities on strengthening Social Security, announced he is running for Congress in New York’s 24th Congressional District today (Sept. 16). Kingson is a professor at Syracuse University and the co-founder of Social Security Works, an advocacy organization credited with stopping recent efforts to cut Social Security. He pointed to the difficulties faced by Upstate and Central New York families and his common sense solutions as chief among his reasons to run in his announcement held this afternoon in Syracuse’s Thornden Park rose garden.

Alleycat Sets The Bar To Combat Underage Drinking

Another college weekend is down in the books and Alleycat of Oswego has no plans of stopping the extra measures they’ve implemented to ensure the law on underage drinking is upheld.
Alleycat, a downtown Oswego bar and state registered night club located at 23 W. Bridge Street, has enacted multiple procedures to make certain that underage drinking is curbed to the fullest extent possible within the establishment.

Pictured is an early 18th century French pistol lock with its lead and flint, found intact during archeological excavations at Fort Ontario in 1984. A weapon of the same era was used when Lt. Basil Dunbar was shot through the lungs with a pistol ball and died on Oct. 12, 1759. In 1902 Dunbar’s remains and his headstone were found under 12 feet of earth within the fort’s earthworks when they were scraped away to level the area of officers’ row in 1903-05.

Fort Ontario Ghost Tours and Reveal Set for Oct. 16 and 17

The Friends of Fort Ontario and Central New York Ghost Hunters will present the annual Ghost Tours and Reveal event at Fort Ontario State Historic Site Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct. 16 and 17. “Fort Ontario is purported to be one of the most haunted locations in the United States, and was the subject of an episode of the SYFY Channel’s Ghost Hunters show in 2012,” said Fort Supervisor Paul Lear.
