On various days this summer, and into this month, Ted Panayotoff, of the Oswego Lighthouse Committee, leads a group on the approximately 1.5-mile jaunt by boat from the Maritime Museum out to Oswego’s iconic West Pierhead Lighthouse. Ultimately, the plan is to not only save the landmark, but open it up to visitors. They began interior restorations, using volunteers, in 2013.
State Police in Lysander are investigating a 3-car crash that occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, at the intersection of John Glenn Blvd. and Buckley Road in the town of Clay. An Oswego County teen suffered minor injuries, police said.
Entergy officials said they will decide by the end of the year whether to close the James FitzPatrick nuclear plant in Scriba. The company’s CEO reportedly told stockholders Entergy may decide not perform the 2016 refueling outage at the plant; closing down FitzPatrick would be the alternative.

This morning in Oswego, in honor of the countless lives lost as a result of the attacks on 9/11, the Oswego Fire Department displayed the American flag overhead on East Bridge Street. This will remain there until midnight.
The Oswego County Health Department advises residents that although aerial spraying appears to have substantially reduced the mosquito population near the north shore of Oneida Lake, it is likely that the EEE and West Nile viruses still remain in the environment. The health department reports that two new samples of mosquitoes, collected before the Sept. 4 aerial spraying, have tested positive for EEE and West Nile virus.
Greene’s Ale House and Grille chicken wings are no secret in Oswego. After all, the local establishment for the last three years has earned the “Best Chicken Wings” in Oswego. But, owner Sean Ohnmacht, better known as Jabber to all who know him, wanted to try something different. So the ultimate stop for his wings was the annual National Chicken Wing Festival in Buffalo.
At Tuesday night’s committee meetings, councilors gave a favorable recommendation to a change order regarding the current milling and paving project. The City Engineer’s Office requested approval of Change Order No. 2, for additional milling and paving work to be performed under the 2015 Milling and Paving Project, in the amount of $60,095.70 with Barrett Paving Materials. The funds are for additional work on several city streets.
Wednesday’s severe thunderstorm knocked down several trees in Oswego’s Breitbeck Park.
Operators returned Nine Mile Point Unit 1 to full power on Tuesday, September 8, following repairs to a steam valve that closed during routine testing on Friday, September 4. Skilled technicians completed the repairs and performed comprehensive tests before returning Unit 1 to service.
