Volunteers Work To Restore, Preserve Oswego’s Lighthouse

On various days this summer, and into this month, Ted Panayotoff, of the Oswego Lighthouse Committee, leads a group on the approximately 1.5-mile jaunt by boat from the Maritime Museum out to Oswego’s iconic West Pierhead Lighthouse. Ultimately, the plan is to not only save the landmark, but open it up to visitors. They began interior restorations, using volunteers, in 2013.

Entergy officials said they will decide by the end of the year whether to close the James FitzPatrick nuclear plant in Scriba. The company’s CEO reportedly told stockholders Entergy may decide not perform the 2016 refueling outage at the plant; closing down FitzPatrick would be the alternative.

Oswego County Health Department Warns – Remain Vigilant with Personal Preventive Measures against Mosquito Bites

The Oswego County Health Department advises residents that although aerial spraying appears to have substantially reduced the mosquito population near the north shore of Oneida Lake, it is likely that the EEE and West Nile viruses still remain in the environment. The health department reports that two new samples of mosquitoes, collected before the Sept. 4 aerial spraying, have tested positive for EEE and West Nile virus.

Council Committee Paves The Way For More Street Work

At Tuesday night’s committee meetings, councilors gave a favorable recommendation to a change order regarding the current milling and paving project. The City Engineer’s Office requested approval of Change Order No. 2, for additional milling and paving work to be performed under the 2015 Milling and Paving Project, in the amount of $60,095.70 with Barrett Paving Materials. The funds are for additional work on several city streets.
