Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen has announced that Branch Commercial, a Malone, NY-based hotel development company, will begin construction in the next two weeks of a new, 81-room Holiday Inn Express and Suites in the City of Oswego. The site of the new Holiday Inn Express is located adjacent and to the north of the Ruby Tuesday restaurant on Route 104, east of the downtown business corridor.

Assemblyman Will Barclay today (June 10) announced that he is circulating a petition to garner public support for legislation (A5454a) that would help ban synthetic drug sales in retail stores and toughen penalties against sales and use – putting them more on par with penalties akin to illegal narcotics. Oswego County Clerk Michael Backus announced today (June 9) that there will be a temporary change in operations at all three of the county Department of Motor Vehicle offices. Each office will have limited window service available to the public one day a week, beginning the week of June 15.

At its meeting Monday night, the Common Council approved use of public space for the Ross family. Julian Ross was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma on August 4, 2011. He was put on Hospice care this spring. Julian will be coming home soon and his family requested use of the park pavilion to honor their son.

Trinity Catholic students celebrated the recent success of their first Pint-Size Hero Program through the American Red Cross. In May, the students set a goal of 25 blood donations, and they were able to surpass that number with 30 total donations.

“This budget process was the last year, by New York State legislation, that we were allowed to use those machines,” the superintendent said. “We will be going to the digital scanning voting process for next year.” That will add a new financial burden; to either rent or buy the modern voting machines. To save money, the district may eliminate a polling site that has historically had very low voter turnout.
