Memorial Day is sacred to all veterans and families of veterans, according to George Hoffman, the master of ceremonies. “We owe it to our fallen heroes to pause from our routine so that we may respectfully honor their lives and sacrifices for liberty and freedom,” he said. “Our defenders are ordinary Americans performing extraordinary deeds,” he added.

There was plenty of cheering at Tuesday’s (May 19) Oswego School Board meeting. And, it had noting to do with the budget vote or board elections. At Tuesday’s meeting, Superintendent Ben Halsey announced that Leighton Elementary School was no longer on the state’s “Focus” list. “We have been working a long time to improve the academic performance in that building,” he said. “I am very happy to announce that Leighton has officially been removed from the focus group. I would like to congratulate the faculty that has dedicated themselves to this process.”
At about 8:30 a.m. today (May 23), the Oswego City Police Departments Patrol Division responded to a second floor apartment at 200 W. First St. in the city of Oswego for a check the welfare complaint.
Upon investigation, the responding officers found indications of a possible methamphetamine lab within the apartment, according to police.
As part of New York State Senior Citizens’ Day, State Senator Patty Ritchie recently recognized Oswego County resident Joanne Gardner for her contributions to her community.
The Oswego County Health Department will conduct an emergency preparedness exercise on May 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Oswego County Health Department at 70 Bunner St. The purpose of the exercise is to practice the county’s ability to dispense lifesaving medication in the event of a public health emergency.
On Wednesday at approximately 5:30 a.m. the Oswego County Drug Task Force with the assistance of the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team and Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team executed a Methamphetamine related search warrant in Parish. As a result of the investigation, materials and ingredients used to manufacture methamphetamine and approximately 3 ounces of methamphetamine oil were seized, police said.
Two local small businesses were recognized during National Small Business Week at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 17th Annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon in Syracuse on May 11. Michael McAndrew has announced his candidacy for Oswego County District Attorney. Currently, McAndrew serves as principal court attorney to the Honorable Walter Hafner Jr. in Oswego County Court and State Supreme Court. His campaign is focused on returning the District Attorney’s Office to the people of Oswego County.
