Local counties are paying as much as $90 to $130 or more each day to outboard prisoners at local jails in other regions. According to the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, counties were outboarding 525 prisoners to other jails last month, including 33 from Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence counties.
“We want people to enjoy the season and maximize the health benefits of swimming by promoting safe practices,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “We each play a role in preventing accidents such as drowning, injuries from improper handling of pool chemicals, and illnesses caused by germs in the places we swim.”
History buffs gathered in the Port City from across the U.S. and Canada to hear retrospectives at the fifth annual Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium. From April 17 to 19, attendees gained fresh insights about this campaign from a panel of esteemed historians at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center, 26 E. First St., Oswego.
Garnering the most votes was Lynda Sereno, the current board vice president, with an unofficial count of 1,398. Tom DeCastro tallied the second most votes with an unofficial total of 1,310. The final count for the budget was 1,150 yes, and 1.079 no.
At about 6:51 a.m. today (May 19), emergency crews responded to an East Sixth Street residence in the city of Oswego for a structure fire. As a result of the investigation, the Oswego City Police Department identified a 13-year-old as a suspect in connection with this fire.
On May 14, the Oswego County Drug Task Force with assistance from the New York State Police Financial Crimes Unit and Computer Crimes Unit executed search warrants for the residence and person of Dylan C. Soeffing at 210 Fifth Ave., Apartment # 7. Investigators seized 809 illegally possessed prescription Xanax pills, a small amount of marihuana and more than $170,000 in U.S. currency, police said.
The Wireless Zone held its grand opening on May 15 at its new location, 137 State Route 104, in the Price Chopper Plaza. Hours include: Monday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Planning and Development Committee Monday night OK’d a request for a variance to the noise ordinance despite continued opposition from some residents. Opponents maintain that the music is too loud and continues too late. The bar owner said he has and continues to find ways to mitigate the noise level.
Tom Drumm said new ideas and energetic new leaders are just what Oswego County needs. The fifth generation Oswego native announced his candidacy for the county legislature’s 16th District with a promise to “change the narrative” of politics in Oswego County.
Nearly 90 Oswego County business owners, elected officials and community leaders left a recent tourism ambassador program at the Tailwater Lodge with increased awareness, enthusiasm and excitement about Oswego County and its tourism industry. “This was by far the best conference/workshop I have attended in decades. The networking alone made the day worthwhile,” said one guest.
