Recently, hundreds of SUNY Oswego students and staff walked past more than 1,000 backpacks displayed from one end of the campus center to the other. The 1,100 backpacks weren’t abandoned by their owners; they were meticulously scattered about the facility on purpose. Many of them had the names of their “owners” affixed to them. They came from a myriad backgrounds and hometowns; names like Ariel, Chelsea, Tim and Drew. The common thread that will forever tie them to each other – they were all college students who took their own lives.

Opening night of the 28th edition of Oswego Harborfest will be a family party night with the announcement of another spectacular musical act on the NRG Lakeview Stage. Nik and the Nice Guys will open this year’s four-day musical and pyrotechnic celebration on July 23.

Investigators reportedly seized nine individually bagged pieces of crack cocaine, having a total weight of 3.2 grams, that one suspect is alleged to have possessed with the intent to sell. The second suspect was found to allegedly be in possession of 12 individually bagged pieces of crack cocaine having a total weight of 8.4 grams, 41 bags of heroin and 10 illegally possessed oxycodone tablets with the intent to sell.

The 2015 eleventh annual Regional Awareness Program, sponsored by the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation, was eye-opening, moving students to make better, safer driving decisions. Perhaps the most touching informational display was the victim impact panel by Oswego County STOP DWI. Three individuals who suffered a tragedy relating to irresponsible driving shared their stories of loss.

A total of 42 illegally possessed Oxycodone tablets, 11 bags of heroin and a small amount of marihuana were seized from the suspect’s vehicle, according to police. A subsequent search warrant was executed at Pfendler’s home where an additional 7 bags of heroin were seized, police added. An additional 50 bags of heroin was seized at a residence in Palermo.

The annual “Walk for Autism” drew more than 850 people to Leighton Elementary School and the nearby Wilber Field on Saturday afternoon. Besides acting as a fundraiser, the event, sponsored by the task force, also focused attention on the plight of Autism victims in Oswego County.

Kenzie is a 9-month-old short haired dark tortie. She’s quiet and demure . . . you’d hardly know she was around until she came looking for love. But then, there she is. Her favorite places for extra attention are under her chin and around her ears. She’s very curious about her surroundings and the other animals that come to visit – and is always welcoming.
