One Dead, One Seriously Hurt In Sandy Creek Crash – Victim Identified

UPDATE: A Lacona woman died in the crash, State Police report. She wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, they said.
State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Sandy Creek. One person reportedly died at the scene and another was seriously injured. A vehicle crashed over a guardrail on County Route 15 near Norton Road early this morning (May 2), police said.

AmeriCorps Helps Communications Student Develop Her Leadership Skills

Last summer, Vanessa Langdon served as an AmeriCorps member at the Fulton Public Library. She initiated a successful Teen Advisory Council and oversaw a group of teens who met weekly to improve the library’s teen book section and participated in a book club. They also did a cleanup project that beautified the library grounds. She will return for her third term of service with Oswego AmeriCorps this summer.

City To Explore Creating A Microgrid

Microgrids are a good idea, according to First Ward Councilor Fran Enwright. In the event of an emergency such as a in ice storm or wind storm that disrupts power, the independent microgrid would be able to provide power to places like the hospital and water plant, he explained. NYSERDA is offering up to 100 percent funding of up to $100,000 for a stage one feasibility assessment with NY Prize proposals being accepted until May 15.

Motor Vehicle Collision Injures One

A single-vehicle accident sent one driver to the hospital today (April 29), and left a portion of State Route 48 closed. The collision occurred around 2 p.m. as the vehicle left the east side of the road and struck a utility pole, shearing the pole near the ground and leaving low hanging power lines. A section of State Route 48 between Munn Street and O’Brien Glenway remains closed to allow National Grid to make repairs to the electrical service.

Group Shines Light On Issue Of College Student Suicides

Recently, hundreds of SUNY Oswego students and staff walked past more than 1,000 backpacks displayed from one end of the campus center to the other. The 1,100 backpacks weren’t abandoned by their owners; they were meticulously scattered about the facility on purpose. Many of them had the names of their “owners” affixed to them. They came from a myriad backgrounds and hometowns; names like Ariel, Chelsea, Tim and Drew. The common thread that will forever tie them to each other – they were all college students who took their own lives.

Oswego County Drug Task Force Announces 2 More Arrests

Investigators reportedly seized nine individually bagged pieces of crack cocaine, having a total weight of 3.2 grams, that one suspect is alleged to have possessed with the intent to sell. The second suspect was found to allegedly be in possession of 12 individually bagged pieces of crack cocaine having a total weight of 8.4 grams, 41 bags of heroin and 10 illegally possessed oxycodone tablets with the intent to sell.
