War of 1812 Symposium Draws Top International Historians

Register today for the Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium to learn more about the war that earned our young nation respect from around the world. The fifth annual event opens on Friday, April 17, with registration and check-in from 6 to 9 p.m. along with a meet-and-greet social and cash bar. Evening programming also includes an academic competition for students from across the U.S. who will compete for cash and prizes as well as the respect of established historians.

Student Advocacy Group at SUNY Oswego Sponsors Innovative Suicide Awareness Display

In an effort to shed light on the tragedy of college student suicide and start a dialogue about a heavily stigmatized topic, Active Minds at SUNY Oswego will host Send Silence Packing, a public education display of 1,100 donated backpacks representing the 1,100 college students lost to suicide each year. Of those backpacks, 200 of them will feature personalized stories about individuals written by their loved ones.

Youth To Create More Artwork Along West Linear Park

“Starting our seventh year of artwork, the mural committee is actively seeking interested youth artists who would like to create a piece of artwork in a public space in the city of Oswego. Youth ages 13 and older, and 8- to 12-year-olds with parent attendance during painting, are welcome to participate,” said Dawn Metott, youth services specialist. “Last year more than 35 students completed more than 40 murals along the river walk and we are hoping to expand that number this year to complete even more murals.”

Legislators Approve Funds for Call N Ride Program

The Oswego County Legislature unanimously accepted a $15,948 New York State grant on April 9 to continue to provide transportation services for seniors who don’t have access to public transportation.
With the Oswego County Office for the Aging providing funds from a grant from New York State Office for the Aging, Community Services for the Elderly, those age 60 and older can now ride for free.

Oswego County Drug Task Force Charge Pair With Felonies

On Friday April 10, investigators with the Oswego County Drug Task Force in conjunction with the Oswego City Police Department and NYS University Police at Oswego executed two cocaine related search warrants. At approximately 3 p.m., a search warrant was executed for the person of Andreli D. Tolentino in the area of West Cayuga and John streets in the city of Oswego. At 6:15 p.m., a search warrant was executed at Oneida Hall room 201 on the SUNY Oswego campus. Joseph P. Simoneau was arrested there.

Nine Mile Unit 1 Operating at Full Power

While the unit was offline, skilled technicians replaced nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel and completed thousands of inspections and maintenance activities to keep the unit running safely and effectively for another two-year operating cycle. Most of this work could not be performed while the unit was online.
