County Fire Coordinator Reminds Residents of State Burn Ban

Oswego County Fire Coordinator Donald Forbes reminds county residents of the annual statewide ban on all open burning which is in effect in New York during the high fire-risk period of March 16 through May 14. The ban makes it illegal to use a burn barrel or open pit as a means for incinerating trash. The burning of leaves is also banned anytime of the year in New York State.

Tracking Great Lakes Noreasters: New Eastern Lake Ontario Project

New York Sea Grant has received funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the National Sea Grant College Program to track historic storm events along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. The project will create a climatological event database to better assist risk projection to help communities increase their storm event resiliency.

Mayor Lifts Winter Parking Ban In Oswego

Mayor Thomas W. Gillen announced the suspension of the alternate side winter parking restrictions, effective Wednesday (March 18), at 12:01 a.m. In accordance with the Oswego City Code, section 257-27, the Mayor may suspend or remove the winter parking ban prior to March 31 at his discretion if winter conditions permit. Residents are asked to be aware of our unpredictable weather and to minimize parking on our streets in the event of any future snowfall.

Nine Mile Point Unit 1 Offline For Scheduled Refueling

Operators removed Nine Mile Point Unit 1 from service early this morning (March 16) for a planned refueling outage. While the unit is offline, skilled technicians will replace nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel and perform thousands of inspections and maintenance activities to keep the unit running safely and effectively for another two years. Most of this work cannot be performed while the unit is online.

Maple Producers Host Maple Weekends

Several local maple producers will host tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 21 and 22, and the following weekend, March 28 and 29, for the New York State Maple Producers Weekends. Maple fanatics can visit these businesses to see the how sap is collected from maple trees, boiled, and transformed into delicious maple syrup.

The 444th Engineer Company based at Oswego - Troops from the Oswego U.S. Army Reserve Center repaired and marked IED (Improvised Explosive Device) locations in Iraq in 2007-08. In 2011-12 the 444th Engineer Company based at Oswego deployed to Afghanistan and suffered three men killed and one severely wounded.

Fort Ontario Receives Certificate of Appreciation

At the 99th annual Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce annual meeting held March 5 at the River Vista Center in Fulton, Executive Director Greg Mills presented Fort Ontario State Historic Site with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of 260 years as a member of the Oswego County business community. Fort Ontario and the Port of Oswego Authority represent Oswego County’s oldest active businesses.

Oswego Fire Department Battles Blaze On West Side

UPDATE: They are not sure how many people were living there or if it was a fraternity house. They are looking into whether this is an official fraternity house. The fire is under investigation and OFD still has personnel on the scene searching for the origin and cause.
Oswego Fire Department crews were dispatched to a structure fire just after midnight at 110 W. Bridge St., near West Eighth Street. First arriving crews reported smoke showing from the two and a half-story multi-family dwelling, with the duty officer reporting an active fire seconds later.

Katko Praises Upcoming Port Of Oswego Dredging Project

“As the only deep water port on the U.S. shores of Lake Ontario, the Port of Oswego is a critical asset for attracting new economic growth opportunities in Oswego County and across Central New York,” said Rep. Katko. “I have been in close contact with the Army Corps of Engineers in Buffalo and appreciate their efforts to make this project a reality. Dredging the shallow waterways of the harbor will allow more ships to navigate the port and provide an enormous boost to our regional economy.”
